Liverpool have begun to stutter – a temporary blip or is it time to truly worry?

One look at the current Premier League table suggests that Liverpool are well on track to be crowned champions this season, with the Reds eight points clear at the top and losing only once in the division (and that was more than five months ago).

However, Arne Slot’s side have drawn four of their eight top-flight matches since the start of January, and they also have a lowly 50% win ratio across their 14 games in all competitions so far in 2025, with three defeats in that time.

The performance of LFC recently has begged the question as to whether their recent form is only a temporary blip, or the beginning of a post-New Year decline which’ll see Arsenal usurp them in the title race.

The past fortnight has arguably been Liverpool’s worst period of the season so far, with a shock FA Cup exit to Plymouth Argyle, the controversial stoppage-time loss of two points at Goodison Park, a dismal performance in scraping past Wolves and yet another 2-2 draw away to Aston Villa despite Mo Salah scoring first.

However, recent content by casino and betting operators across the UK still show that Liverpool are firm favourites to win the Premier League this season. Is there still hope?

Worrying echoes of the past for Liverpool

The Reds’ recent drop-off has had worrying echoes of 2018/19, when they went into January with a commanding lead in the Premier League but were reeled in by City within two months following a series of draws, and they never managed to get back in front of Pep Guardiola’s side thereafter.

It was a defeat at the Etihad Stadium which triggered that costly collapse six years ago, and a repeat result in the same fixture on Sunday would lead to further questions being asked of whether Slot’s side can hold their nerve in the title race.

It’s not just the dropped points which have been a frustration for Liverpool, either. We’re still scratching our heads as to how Darwin Nunez missed at Villa Park in midweek, and injuries are beginning to mount as Conor Bradley joins Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton on the treatment table.

Furthermore, the relentless demands being placed on Ryan Gravenberch appear to be catching up with him now. The Dutchman has been a fixture in the starting line-up all season and has proven undroppable, but some subdued recent displays suggest that even his legs might be starting to feel the strain.

The Reds could’ve placed one hand on the Premier League trophy had they won even one of their games against Everton or Aston Villa, but so far they’ve been unable to put Arsenal away in the title race, and the Gunners continue to hang in there after their late show at Leicester last weekend.

Liverpool still the masters of their own destiny

However, despite some worries beginning to emerge for Liverpool, they remain the masters of their own destiny and, as it stands, can still afford two more slip-ups than Mikel Arteta’s side.

Even four points against Man City and Newcastle this week would send out a statement that the Reds won’t be easily caught, and it’d be a testament to their character if they come through a daunting 15-day run this month with their nearest pursuers still at arm’s length.

LFC mightn’t have won a lot of games recently, but they’re not losing too many either, and the second-half response at Villa Park on Wednesday indicated that they have the necessary resolve to keep the title race in their own hands.

The chase could go right to the final hurdle, but Liverpool simply need to take care of their own business and remain in front of Arsenal before the sides meet at Anfield in May.
