Ibrahima Konaté: What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool’s rebuild under Arne Slot has been progressive, proactive… and at times painful.

With a Premier League title freshly secured – one which confounded betting odds – and a new tactical vision taking shape, the Reds are attempting to reshape their squad for long-term success without tearing down the pillars which brought glory. However, in the case of Ibrahima Konaté, they may be losing one of those pillars altogether.

Now 26, the French defender is in the final year of his contract. Reports in France suggest that he has made up his mind and many popular betting sites are offering odds on Konate to leave Liverpool this summer or run his contract down next year.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are all said to be circling, keen to capitalise on what could be a rare opportunity to sign a world-class defender on a free transfer.

Liverpool want to keep Konaté – but is the feeling mutual?

Liverpool have been eager to keep the player. He’s been offered a new contract, but the response from the player’s camp has been lukewarm at best. According to multiple sources, including Foot Mercato, Konaté has been left disappointed by the club’s offer, both in terms of financial value and role within the team.

The sense is that he no longer sees his future on Merseyside, especially as LFC embark on a new chapter under Slot, with a reshaped backline already taking form. The club’s recent pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi is understood to be directly tied to the Frenchman’s anticipated departure.

The 2026 World Cup in the United States is fast approaching, and for Konaté, a starting spot with France is far from guaranteed. With William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Koundé and Jean-Clair Todibo all battling for the same position in defence, regular football at the highest level is a non-negotiable if the 26-year-old wants to be starting for Les Bleus.

Liverpool know this. If Konaté wants to arrive in America as part of Didier Deschamps’ starting XI – or to even make the squad – he can’t afford to spend a season on the fringes. That puts pressure on the player to either commit or risk being rotated out of the picture. In other words, Liverpool still hold the aces – if not financially, then professionally.

If he does leave, it’s likely to be for Real Madrid, who have already lured Trent Alexander-Arnold away from Anfield this summer. Konaté reportedly favours the Bernabéu as his next destination, attracted by the club’s continental pedigree and the opportunity to partner long-term with Éder Militão or Antonio Rüdiger.

Los Blancos may not be the only suitor – PSG and Barcelona are also watching closely – but the Spanish capital seems to be where his heart lies.

For Liverpool, the growing trend is worrying. Losing top players on free transfers not only weakens the squad but also erodes the club’s bargaining power in the market.

Konaté remains a fan favourite at Liverpool

Konaté’s LFC career has, at times, hinted at greatness. Signed from RB Leipzig in 2021 for around £36m, he brought physicality, recovery pace and composure to the defence – attributes which made him a near-perfect partner for Virgil van Dijk.

Consistency has been a challenge, though. Injuries have interrupted his rhythm across multiple seasons, and despite some standout performances – including a superb Champions League run in 2021/22 – there have also been occasional displays where he’s been below his usual standards.

He remains a popular figure at Anfield, a player whose personality, on-pitch charisma and powerful performances have endeared him to the Kop. He lifts the crowd with every crunching challenge and celebrates like a fan in red himself, but that goodwill isn’t limitless.

If he continues to stall on a new deal while rumours swirl, there’s a risk that the narrative shifts. Liverpool fans respect ambition, but they value commitment more.

If Konaté is seen to be hedging his bets or treating the club as a stepping stone, especially after a title-winning season, his relationship with the supporters could suffer. What was once affection could become apathy – or worse, resentment – if clarity doesn’t come soon.

His likely exit is the latest chapter in a careful, calculated transition at Anfield. As Slot looks to reshape Liverpool in his own image, not everyone will remain on board, and that’s fine. The key is to control the exits, not be dictated to.

For now, the power lies in LFC’s hands. If Konaté wants to lead France’s defence on the world stage next year, he must play, and play well. Whether that happens in red or elsewhere may yet be decided by the club, not the player.
