No matter what your take on the whole thing is, the man is a legend, never has there been such coverage for a former manager of a Premier League club. Realistically however I can’t see Rafa returning to Liverpool, however the sure romance of the whole things stirs up imagination and great memories of that one night in Istanbul.
Incredible that an online Poll we did last night shows 65%+ of Liverpool fans want Rafa back. There is really no in between when it comes to Rafa, many love him with a passion while some hate him with a passion.

Apart from his last season of coming 7th, which currently seems like a good position to be in considering where we are sitting in the league, he came nearly in the top 4 every season. This while he had to manage our crippling debts with interest payments of up to £40 million a year. Currently we only pay around £6 million a year. Imagine what Rafa could do. Just bring him back Henry.

Hi Mark Owen, As i understand and reported Paco Aryestan left because of his differences with Rafa, I reckon get rid of Sammy Lee and put Paco as assistant to RH and see how it works , correct me if im wrong we were undefeated for +- 10 games before he left.
I concur with many here. I think they way he was treated was awful. I also know, in fact all if our supporters know what he done whilst standing upto G&H whilst threatened with the sack. Yes he used his relatiobship with the fans that time. Rafa is one of europes better managers, I still think had we got the resources that Rafa would have us playing football of 2008/2009!
And for all the haters, he acknowledged he made mistakes. They all do, fergie with v. nistleroy, stam. Rafa with alonso. He didn’t hang onto those who he made mistakes with.

Hodgson is currently on a better net spend, and worked with far more restrictions then Rafa did the summer before with a lessr squad and is doing a similar job without alienating players.

Of course there is a middle ground. I thought Benitez was a good manager and brought some great success to the club. At the same time I thought his tactics could be questionable (especially when it came to substitutions) and ultimately spent too much time focusing on the ownership issue rather than getting his squad into order.

The time Rafa tried to sell Alonos was on the back of two mediocre seasons. Nobody wanted to sign him for more than 14m so he stayed. He then had an excellent season – putting himself in the shop window maybe? He went for 20m plus.

i often wondered what Benitez would have achieved with a supportive boardroom. However I also felt that he lost the dressing room last season. Gerrard walked around the slumped around the pitch. His expression when Torres was taken off said it all when we were struggling.
I will always remember the great European nights, but feel its time to move on.
I think Roy is a gent but is in deep waters. We need a European manager who will attract some of the best players in Europe. Not the likes of Carlton Cole and Poulsen.
While the injury problems that blighted his stay at inter were somewhat self inflicted, the vast majority werent. Inter rested on their laurels from last season, even got rid of Balotelli into the mix and as the saying goes, if you’re not going forward, you’re going backwards. Milan invested in Robinho and Ibrahimovic, amongst others, Juve have managed to get Aquilani off us (Aquilani is quality and while I think Rafa didn’t give him enough of a chance, Roy let him go. It’s one of my biggest gripes about his reign so far) amongst others.
Rafa had one bad season with us, the year before we were one win away from winning the title. At the start of last season, with a very similar side, we were touted as title challengers. What has changed? Some of our personnel and our manager. Roy Hodgson I like you, I even thought you were the man for the job in the summer.

Rafael Benitez is a legend and a world class manger! There is no disputing the fact. Since 2001 Rafa has won 2 la ligas, 1 uefa cup, 1 super cup, 1 supercoppa italia, 1 supercup, 1 charity sheild, 1 Fa Cup, 1 European Cup!!! Thats 9 trophies in 9 years. He also took Liverpool the closest we have been to a league title in 20 years, to a seventh European cup final and a league cup final to boot. There are only 4 or 5 coaches in the world who have been statistically ‘more’ successful in the last decade! Aswell as this he reinstated Liverpool FC to our rightful place in European football…the top! We were feared under Rafa, we had pride, hope and were fearless…all qualities the man himself possesses! He fought for us, he loves us and most importantly he loves out great club!!

Why would anyone want Rafa back? His negativity cost us the 2009-2009 prem title, his last season at Liverpool was woeful and he deserved a bullet not the sack, and his latest efforts at Inter have seen the Italian treble winning side slump miserably. He is too stubborn and plays negative football. His substitutions were unbelievable! Having said that ‘Woy’ isn’t much better in that department. He was brought in to steady the ship and cut the ludicrous wage bill and squad size, which he is achieving, his coaching skills and tactics however are in question. BUT he is infinately better than the short toothed Spaniard!

We all know that RH is not the man for the job. I really can’t understand why fans are screaming for Rijkaard, he’s never been the man for anything. We need a main man to deliver. At Inter he had a squad that dominated Italy for years, and last year had a clean sweep of trophies under a far superior manager. Whether the fans enjoyed his football or not he has dragged them down to 7th…something that would of been seen as border line impossible.
Saying he wasn’t backed by the Liverpool board doesn’t add up…the sheer number of signings he was allowed to make shows this as none sense. In his time he bought multiple players for £10m plus…everything was somebody else’s fault just like now at Inter.
Rafa was a good manager, not great, a good man and will go down in our history for 2005 & Istanbul, but nothing else…because as Shankly said…first is first and second is nowhere.
It’s funny how some people only remember Rafa’s one bad season. Show me another manager that hasn’t had a bad season. And worked for owners that worked to weaken the squad after we finished second.
