Mario Gotze turned down Liverpool as he’s holding out for three specific sides

We’ve just about had enough of writing Mario Gotze transfer updates, and you’ve likely had enough of reading them too; but SportBild’s report – translated by Sporting Witness – rubs salt in our wounds.

Jurgen Klopp had made the Germany attacker his no.1 summer target, and with Bayern happy to sell, Liverpool were confident a move could be finalised.

However, two weeks back Gotze sacked his agent and told the world he was happy to stay and fight for a place under incoming Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti – much to the surprise of CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge – who informed Gotze that if this was the case – he’d have to get used to the bench (via ESPN).

Now, SportBild claim that Gotze rejected us because he thinks a move to Liverpool would be a step down, and he instead is holding out for a transfer to Real Madrid, Barcelona or our Premier League rivals Arsenal.

This is all a little baffling. Why he’d want to change from Bayern’s bench to Real or Barcelona’s, which would seem inevitable considering the wingers on the books of the Spanish giants, is strange. Arsenal do have Champions League football to offer, but we have Jurgen Klopp – and do not regard Arsene Wenger’s side as especially a step above ourselves.

If this story is true, it really is time we focus our attentions elsewhere. Gotze’s not yet shown the required desire to come and help a club as big as ours, and if he’d prefer to sit on the bench somewhere he deems more glamorous, then so be it.
