Reds loanee addresses the interesting battle to be Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper

A fight between two men to be their club’s number one is something that Liverpool has needed for some time.

Goalkeeper Danny Ward has spent his season on loan at Huddersfield Town from Liverpool and has commented on the importance of the contest between Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

Speaking in the latest episode of #LFCWORLD, Liverpoolfc.com quoted him as saying: “It’s just part of being at a big club, as a goalkeeper if you’ve got someone who’s pushing you it’s good.”

“It’s been fascinating to watch from afar, normally I’m in amongst it, but we’ve got two great goalkeepers at the moment and hopefully they can keep pushing each other on.”

“If you’ve got top goalkeepers like we have at Liverpool it is tough. It is a competition for that number one jersey.”

Jurgen Klopp publicly named Karius as his first choice last month but was open to the fact that things can change quickly as far as the goalkeeping situation is concerned.

Karius is still finding his feet in the Premier League but looks to be gradually rediscovering his form after some early signs of uncertainty.

Elsewhere, Simon Mignolet has stepped up his work in training as he fights to win back his starting spot.

The competition is great for both players and will undoubtedly lead to them both improving in the long term.

Ward, himself, has enjoyed a good start to the Championship campaign, helping his side take up a league position just outside of the automatic promotion spots.

It will be interesting to see how the goalkeeping situation unfolds throughout the rest of the season.
