Liverpool defender delighted with clean sheet and happy to take a point from Southampton game

For Joel Matip and the rest of Liverpool’s back four, yesterday’s goalless draw will have been as equally important as a win.

The goals didn’t come as freely as they have done so far this season, but a clean sheet represents another step forward with regards to the team improving defensively.

Speaking after the game, Matip told Liverpoolfc.com: “A point away at a good team. We had a few chances but we can’t always score three or four goals.”

“It’s okay; one point at Southampton, we can live with this!”

“For a defender it’s always good to have a clean sheet and not to concede a goal but we always want to win.”

Matip was again outstanding and continued his impressive start to life in the Premier League at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

He commanded his side’s defensive work alongside Dejan Lovren and was very rarely troubled by the aerial presence of Saints striker Charlie Austin.

The defender played a significant role in restricting Claude Puel’s side to just three shots on goal and helping his team avoid conceding for the first time in the last 12 Premier League away games.

The goals will return to this Liverpool side. Let’s just hope the clean sheets come on a more regular basis.
