Jurgen Klopp delivers spirit-boosting injury update

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Liverpool will welcome back Sadio Mane for Wednesday’s trip to face Roma.

The Senegalese forward was absent for Saturday’s goalless draw against Stoke at Anfield due to injury, sparking fears he may not have been fit for the Champions League semi-final second-leg at the Stadio Olimipico.

As it happens, Mane’s omission from the squad was precautionary in aid of resting him with the midweek contest in mind.

Despite fluffing his lines in front of goal on two key occasions during Tuesday’s 5-2 win, Mane did serve as a pivotal figure in spearheading a fearsome attacking performance from Klopp’s men.

Speaking after his side’s draw against Stoke, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “Sadio did not play but he will be fine for Wednesday.”

Mane proved a significant loss against Paul Lambert’s struggling Potters, with Liverpool seriously lacking an injection of spark in the final third.

Recent months have seen the former Southampton man not only pose as a threat in behind, but also when dropping deeper to lead the transition from defence to attack with his bursting runs.

His ability to break the lines will undoubtedly be vital to Liverpool’s chances in Rome, as they look to shutout another miracle comeback from the Serie A outfit and ensure his own team remains deadly on the break throughout.

In light of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s season-ending injury, his interchanging movement is faced with an increased responsibility of both creating and finishing attacks.
