Gary Neville explains why United fans should want Reds to win the Premier League

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, not normally known as being a man to get behind the Reds, says Red Devils fans should want Liverpool to win the Premier League this season, rather than Manchester City.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side top of the table having accumulated an incredible 57 points from 22 games, and United’s rivals Manchester City close behind, Neville says many United fan’s preference is for the Reds to win the title.

Few Manchester United fans are likely to openly agree despite Pep Guardiola’s men being city rivals, but Neville explained the logic behind his claim.

He said on his Sky Sports podcast: “It is going to be Liverpool or City, they are well in front. Do you want City to win back-to-back titles and begin a period of domination, which back-to-back titles can feel like?

“Or do you want Liverpool to win the title? A couple of friends of mine said a few weeks ago that they wanted Liverpool to win it.

“It was the first time I had heard a United fan say they wanted Liverpool to win it over City because they felt it would be a one-off, whereas they felt if City won back-to-back titles, they could go on and win three or four.”

Whether that would prove to be the case is definitely up for debate – the Reds are certainly not going anywhere soon – but you can kind of see his point: seeing City win two on the spin would not be nice for United.

Whoever wins the league, it won’t be United and it shows the gulf between us and them that this is even a topic of discussion.

We can’t see that many United fans will be openly supporting the Reds until May.
