This weekend’s matches have seen more than their fair share of controversy. First, we had Theo Walcott apologising for diving in an attempt to cheat his way to a penalty. Second came El Hadji Diouf’s despicable verbal assault on QPR’s Jamie Mackie while the R’s defender was lying injured on the turf with a double fracture to his leg. Thirdly, we had Coward Webb award Manchester United with their obligatory Old Trafford penalty after just 32 seconds of our tie for a Berbatov dive, who later went on to pick up ITV’s Man of the Match award.
But worse than all these indiscretions, according to the FA, was Ryan Babel RTing of a mocked up photo of Webb in a United jersey. See below.
Considering Babel’s offence was probably the least serious of the 4 I have mentioned here, we ask why has he been targeted by the FA? Could be in revenge for other members of Liverpool FC staff accusing the FA of making Steven Gerrard’s injury worse while he was on international duty recently? Is it an example of an out-of-touch controlling body, who doesn’t understand Twitter, trying to flex its muscles and make an example out of Babel? Or is it that Ryan is too close to the truth?
In his last 6 games he has officiated at Old Trafford, Webb as awarded Manchester United 4 penalties. All four of them were incorrect calls:
1. Yesterday, a blatant dive by Berbatov
2. A non-existent handball by Clichy when Arsenal visited in December
3. Javier Mascherano’s foul on Valencia last March outside the box. Valencia fell into the area and a penalty ensued.
4. Way back in April 09, Spurs’ Heurelho Gomes is wrongly adjudged to have fouled Carrick in the box. Gomes played the ball first and did not commit a foul.
Instead of looking to punish players’ for making jokes on Twitter, the FA would be much better off looking at more pressing issues, in particular the poor standard of refereeing. When will the FA realise that Howard Webb MBE means Howard Webb Manchester Bias Evident?

Excellent. We should, and have to continue to expose the shameful bias Utd. enjoy! A disgrace. The FA seem to target Liverpool when they need to get a point through. A few seasons back it was Mascherano and the respect campaign; this season it’s Babbel and Twitter! It angers me, as a football fan, that so blatant favoritisms exist. We need to get the message through. Dalglish has my full support in referring to the penalty as a joke!

Apparently Girrafe lipp Ferdinand tweeted that it’s swings and roundabouts so in a way he also knows his teammate is a cheating t**t. Webb’s mistakes at World Cup final says it all. It was poor referring and we saw it again yesterday. The FA have got to do something about it.

Oh man, Lee Mason – that name sent a shiver right down the spine. He’s worse than Webb. Hopefully now with someone as canny as King Kenny the tide will turn.
To be perfectly honest, knowing Webb was ref was my biggest fear. I may dare say that Stevie’s dismassal was technically correct, but the point it that this was generated by the ridiculous penalty call which conditioned the game within 30 seconds from kickoff. Man Utd should not need handouts.
I remember very well two season ago when Spurs were tearing Man Utd apart at Old Trafford, when at the beginning of the second half Webb awarded Man Utd a penalty out of nothing! It gave them enough impetus to come back and find a winner well into stoppage time. That season, Liverpool lost the PL for a whisker after having been over 7 points clear at one point.

We got 2 penalties at Old Trafford in the 2 previous games. Let us have a look at our performances and prove the likes of United and Chelsea wrong. Do you really believe LFC could win that game? Wake up and stop dreaming. There is always someone else to blame but the club. The one good thing that happened yesterday was the replecement of Torres. I am sure the message is very clear here and we will get the best out of him in the next few games.

Koptight two wrongs don’t make one right. It’s too different games. We looked much much better yesterday and this even after suffering a ridiculous penalty after 30 seconds. I was not looking at Liverpool winning the game but even though it all went south, I saw Dalglish’s input by fielding Agger and Aurelio from minute one, and I saw a much higher workrate in general.

If it was sour grapes off are fans i would say so,but the bias towards manure is just to much now,some one has to take a stand against the bent refs and corrupt FA. Koptight, whether we deserved to win or not, that wasn’t a penalty. The Gerrard situation was different you could see why Webb gave the red card, but it could have been a yellow quite easily. Howard Webb is not a world class referee and is not the leagues best, this was the guy who showed 3 yellow cards to one player before sending him off. I do think refereeing the Champions League final and the World Cup final has got to his bald head. The WC final was the worst refereeing i had ever seen, 1 tackle sticks out which the whole world had seen apart from Webb, the one where Dejong Kung-fu kicked Xabi Alonso in the chest, he should have been banned for 3 games minimum.
Besides its not as though this was the first time hes made stupid decisions against us, both the linesman and Webb need to be demoted to the Championship or lower……YNWA

United have had the benefit of decisions like this for years now, its nothing new and will continue without anyone of signifiicance challenging the FA. Rafa tried to do it and even some of our own fans made a mockery of him so why would anyone bother.
Considering Spurs scored a goal that was a meter over the line a couple of years back only to have it ruled as no goal nothing regarding United should surprise anyone these days. I accept that every team gets dubious decisions from time to time and more often or not you make your own luck in a game but I would genuinely love to see the likes of PAul Tomkins analyse penalties for etc for each club in the PL over the last 20 years. theres no doubt United would be overwhelmingly on top for dubious decisions going in their favour.

Bitter bitter pool fans, clear cut penalty, Berba felt the contact and was enough to knock him off balance, it’s called good forward play, then again you have saint stevie and torres who never go down easily. At least Webb had the bottle to sent off saint stevie, there’s absolutely no doubt about that red card, luck Carricks career isn’t over.

Man Utd ARE a great team, but there is no denying that whoever refs at Old Trafford is conditioned, and Howard Webb (supposedly one of the best refs in the world) has shown this time and time again. I understand authority, I understand ego perhaps, but I don’t understand how you can ruin a game after 30 seconds. Berbatov went down and he gobbled the bait like there’s no tomorrow. As a forward, Berbatov did the right thing, as a ref, there are a gazillion occasions when refs pass over such contacts, and aftr 30 secs in a Man Utd vs Liverpool game you know very well you are going to mess it up and make it a bodycheck contest.

Some pathetic and disgusting comments on here that do nothing to give credibility to the views expressed. Gerrard was a straight red – no question. The penalty was debatable but they are often given. Agger shouldn’t have put his foot in when Berbatov was clearly not causung a significant threat and the ball would have run out.

Gerrard may have been given a yellow by another referee without a doubt and I can’t think of another referee who would have awarded a penalty for the minimal contact that sent Berbatov diving to the ground. So their is a point that Webb was biased towards United but he usually is so I’m not sure why everyone is surprised. However we can not blame the loss on Webb, we had 90 minutes to get a goal back, Gerrard’s decision making and another woeful performance from Torres is to blame for us losing the game.
