Alex Teixeira update: Liverpool and Shakhtar at standstill, deal unlikely

Liverpool fans have been waiting patiently for good news to emerge from our discussions with Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk for their star player Alex Teixeira, but time is running out – and it looks like differences in valuation will scupper the deal for the Brazilian.

According to Ben Smith of the BBC, a January deal for Teixeira is ‘unlikely’, as talks between the clubs have stopped.

Liverpool had a third bid of £31m for the attacking midfielder rejected yesterday claimed multiple reports, including this one in the Daily Star, but Shakhtar reiterated their position that they will not sell for less than his £38m asking price.

The January transfer window closes on Monday evening, and with Teixeira currently holidaying in Brazil, time is very much running out to reach an agreement, despite the player openly pining after a move in an online interview (cited here by the BBC).

If we fail to sign Teixeira, we’ll surely face intense competition for his services in the summer. What’s more, we’ll have to battle the four competitions we’re still in with the current attacking force – who’ve blown more cold than hot this year.
