Michael Edwards has targeted a £10m potential star to cover both LB and CB

Liverpool are being credited with an interest in Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey by Football Insider.

They claim that a source close to the club has explained how Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s director of football and all-round transfer negotiating hotshot, has sent scouts to check out the 21-year-old on multiple occasions.

They reckon he could cost around £10m, which in today’s market, is a relative pittance for someone who’s proven to be on the best defensive players in the Championship.

Godfrey is most comfortable at centre-back, but has also played at left-back, a position that needs strengthening this summer, and holding midfield.

It’s perhaps this versatility that has made Godfrey a target. Jurgen Klopp loves multi-functional players, who allow him to have a tightly-knit squad instead of simply getting two good footballers for every position.

With Alberto Moreno leaving, we need cover at left-back to support Andy Robertson, but not necessarily someone who will start on a regular basis.

A youngster, who can also provide support in other positions, makes sense – although we’d prefer Ryan Sessegnon, Fulham’s younger, offensively better fullback.

Manchester United have also been linked to Godfrey, who is excellent technically and has raw physicality that belies his age.
