Am I not a fan?

Posted by

I don’t’ even know how to begin.

Never in my life would I think I had to say this, but my god, there is a lot of shit talking going on here. Never in a million years, would I have thought that my ones, my own red family, the people I see as second sisters and brothers would say something as stupid as this.

When I started to write her on Empire Of  The Kop, I was expecting to get many comments by people. Either saying that I should quit write mainly because of the reason that I am of the gender female or you know, that I obviously can’t understand the offside rule.

Hope you sense the sarcasm. But really, I was ready to face people that were going to say that the why I write is bad, that my thoughts are wrong and that I don’t know anything about Liverpool Football Club.

But the other day, I got the worst comment ever.

You call yourselves “fans”? How many of you were at anfield on Thursday? I bet the writer wasn’t.

First and foremost, this person means that everyone one of us, who was not at Anfield on Thursday or any other day, is not a real fan?

Okey, I’m shocked. Are this boy aware of that Liverpool has a quite lot more supporters, then the capacity of Anfield?

Liverpool Football club have millions of fans all around the world. How dare you insult us like that? I’ve gotten mail from people from the US, Kuwait, Austria, India, Malaysia, all of them having one thing in common. Being a red, through and through.

Do you know how hard it is, being a LFC fan abroad? Never having someone to chat to, no shoulder to cry on, no other fan to share the joy with. We can just leave the club when everything screws up, when we don’t win games, cups or trophies. We can just be those plastic fans that every other single club has and just be around whenever we feel like it.

But no, we stand there, just as everyone else does. We are not plastic fans, just because we can’t go to Anfield every gameday. Are you seriously saying that the owner of this blog is less of a fan then you? Or that I am?

I am just stunned that someone would actually offense me and others like that. and by others I mean millions around the world. It should not matter if you turn up to games or not, just as long as your heart beat for Liverpool, nothing else really matters.

At least some of you aren’t complete idiots. This is what a rational person answered;

If real fans are measured by their opportunities to get to watch their club at Anfield or otherwise, then LFC would be a club with very few real fans. I think it is very arrogant (and Chelsea-like) of you to disrespect so many Liverpool fans around the world, some of whom might have supported and followed our team longer than you, and probably before you was even a twitch in your old mans’ sack.

Oh and one more thing. To the lad that wrote that shit. You are lucky, being a Liverpool supporter. Because if you were anything else, I wouldn’t let you get away with it.

  1. Michael Risley ,

Thnks ever so much for your Head Mistress impression it had one laughing heartily at elevensies old chap , wot , wot , wot .

But seriously Mickey this isnt Victorian Britain & the Irish , me included are at least as well educated if not better educated than their English counterparts .

With that education under my belt if I choose to speak in my vernacular theres nothing you can do about it other than whine like an ex wife as you just have done .

The fact we Irish speak English at all to Englands ever lasting shame is because of the Statutes of Killkiney which deemed it legal to hang draw & quarter anyone teaching in Gaelic , so in response to such oppression & the shameful fact that the Englands Iron Fist national & international representation of the diversity of accent including Irelands 4 provincial accents , Scotlands & Wales accents , Geordies , Scousers etc rendering us minnions to the influx of foreigners that assume we all speak like the Queen .

God Knows its too much to expect fairness let alone Justice form an Englander but at least adjust yer sights & try living in this millennium , If the English cant even dictate or protect their own culture within the boundary’s of their own state how the hell do you expect your attempt to correct me , a big strong man who would devour a weakling wee pansy boy like you before dinner , seriously ?

    Rule Britannia my arse .

    YNWA

  2. By God that Digger Barnes is good with tha ball at his feet !

    Lok at him go !

    Digger !!

    Digger !!!

    Digger !!!!!

  3. @Digger

What agenda might I have? Your original post struck me as a tad pretentious and condescending. As such, I felt inclined to respond. Nothing more than that. Maybe I had too much coffee yesterday, or maybe I was overly sensitive because my cats knocked a plant onto the kitchen floor, or maybe, just maybe, your original post was slightly pretentious and condescending? Seriously, I was not trying to start a pissing contest with you. If you like, however, I could send you my CV.

In your posts, you imply that there is a proper, genteel, civilized, good-humored way to identify with the club – and it comes from (again reading a bit between the lines) growing up in Liverpool. I just don’t buy it. Like it or not, Liverpool football is much larger than your understanding of it. That’s all I’m saying. The fact that some supporters find deeper significance than you in the acronym YNWA does not not automatically mean that they are members of a cult. Moreover, out-of-town supporters who choose to boycott the Sun are probably not doing it for ulterior or nefarious reasons. For me, solidarity comes to mind.

There is an air of haughtiness to your posts that strikes a chord with me. If you can’t accept that somebody could find offense (albeit minor offense) with what you wrote, so be it. But don’t let me go over-the-top, as I did in my last post when I referenced a certain LFC supporter in the Congo. This is a laughable argument between us, one that most people, I’m certain, are ignoring.

  4. Ignoring or hoping Alex ?

Listin up Alex , yer in no position to talk about anyone getting uppity after wat ya typed to me about being Misogynistic , yer obviously a snotty mouthy Yank thats finding out the hard way that he should be ducking instead of talking around a handy homegrown player like Digger Barnes .

That aside my take on it is this , yer ignoring & disrespecting the foundations of the Club which if you like it or not are Scouse .

Philadelphia doesn’t compare , even other British Citys dont compare , Scousers are like their own wee principality within the UK .

The immigration you refer to is the migration of Scots , Irish , Welsh & English into the City , that isnt Immigration as you know it its very much a traditional indigenous place with traditional values that also accommodates other foreign cultures , Philadelphia is a mish mash on a colony or ex colony making things up as they go .

Digger is on the ball , he’s a handy Scouse boy & hes lettin you kno it too , you need to relax a wee bit & accept that there’s very little anyone in the area doesn’t realize about the club & that we didnt get so big by accident .

  5. I know that most of you won’t get to read my post.. But I sure hope the “fan” who said that people who didn’t go to anfield on thursday weren’t real fans does read this…
I’m a 16 year old scouser who live in one of the greatest countries today, Egypt.
I don’t know you if you did really care about knowing but I’ve been living my past weeks protecting my house from thugs and I’ve been very active politically speaking.
I, as a young scouser who’ve been bleeding Red since my birth, have a dream.. And I hope I get to do it, that dream is just to go to anfield, even if its not even on a matchday, I just wanna breathe the same air that ppl like dalglish, paisley, shankley and gerrrard, ppl who i take as idols, breathed..
Although my country was going through the hardest times ever, the only thing that made me smile was to watch Liverpool, in very hard conditions and very bad streaming (as the internet stopped working for a couple of days), go on an unbeaten run…
I’m not saying every fan should look up to me as i’m sure there are plenty of fans out there who does the same.. All I’m telling you is just to enjoy and have the privilege supporting the best club there has ever been, whether you’re watching them play on tv or at the stadium!
Finally I want to thank the lady who wrote that article as it says a lot from what i’ve been going through…

    YNWA from Egypt..

  6. Nope, Irish Alien is not ignoring it. It is Irish “Alien” and not Irish Allen, right? I think I mistakenly referred to you as Irish Allen in my previous post. My deepest apologies. Look, my only beef with you stems from your horrendous post to the writer of the above article. What you wrote, I think, warranted a response in which you were called a misogynistic fucktard. But maybe you were joking, so that’s why I first asked if you were having a laugh. Regardless, what you wrote was in mighty poor taste – joke or not. As for your two cents on my argument with Digger…fine, you win. I’m done with it. I certainly do not have the time or energy (well maybe I have the time) to decipher what problems you have with what I wrote.

In all sincerity, I apologize to any Liverpudlian I might have offended with what I wrote. I don’t think anything I wrote was particularly offensive, however. Perhaps my initial response to Digger’s post was a knee-jerk reaction and not very well thought out (most knee-jerk reactions are). Fair enough, I can take that sort of criticism. The bottom line is that I truly believe the supporters of Liverpool FC constitute a global community. And I say this with deep respect for the history of LFC in the city of Liverpool. Of course I recognize and revere the Scouse roots of LFC. Any true supporter would.

A truce, gentlemen – how about it? Let’s put our energy into gearing up for Sunday’s match and stop the bickering between us. Perhaps we can all walk away from this with a little bit of knowledge gained and a deeper respect for the multitude of LFC supporters out there – everywhere!

  7. Theres no serious damage done Alex , as Digger suggested lighten up a bit , look to make a wise crack as yer first option & if that dont work go “All American” on em , no one is asking to hold hands , if ya got a point to make by all means make it .

As for you accusing me of hating women ?

Well I find that offensive when all I done was point a teenage girl in the direction of womans football where she will be appreciated .

I done it humorously but make no mistake it was an act of kindness .

If I were to try to tell you about baseball or assault rifles you would find me hard to listen to because I know less about them than an average Yank , now imagine a 17 year old girl with even less knowledge about them trying to spout off like an expert & you will see where I’m coming from .

My humor is pretty typical football or “Lads” humor as in its a mans game , not to be wasted on children or women & its not for girls but womans football is for girls .

Now put me in a traditional female dominated environment like a hairdressers & I’ll be on my best behavior .

I have traditional views & make no apology for em

Can you see a spade being called a spade yet , I hope so coz at this rate we will all be wearing skirts & bras before the decade is out .

  8. I get you , and i totally agree with you , i am a red supporter and no matter if they lose or win i will still be a red supporter . I live in Miami FL im the only one of my friends that likes liverpool , the rest of them like chelsea , man u , madrid , arsenal , barca , but im the only red and everytime liverpool lose i have to deal with them making fun of my team and i dont have anyone to share comments or talks with , like i just feel lonely . My dream is to go to anfield , since i live in miami i havent been able to go but that doesn’t mean i am not a true fan , im a fan just like every other lfc fan except the fake ones .

  9. Thank you for this extremely valid post.

It hurts me to think that we’re not considered real fans simply because we’re unable to be at Anfield. Just as much as it does, when vitriol is spewed about day trippers. I understand the sentiment behind it, but I do understand those tourists who’d just once want to experience the best football ground in the world.

If I could, I’d be there for every single game, reserves, u-18, everything. Hell, I’d probably pitch tent right outside and live there.

But since I live thousands of miles away in India, I do other things. I stay up till 3 and 4 am watching every single LFC game I can. I blog. I read. I talk extensively about everything possible to do on Twitter. It’s us who living in cricket-crazy countries like India who keep Liverpool FC going here and spend much money on merchandise.

If physical presence is the only criteria for being a fan, Liverpool wouldn’t have the WORLDWIDE presence it does.

  10. Your right Irish Alien, we do all speak our own dialects, but dialect is something that is spoken and not written. We don’t write how we speak and I can speak more languages than you, that I can promise.

Fans like you have never been welcome on the Kop and never will be. You are a moaning idiot who should be supporting Aston Villa like your friends. Go and make a bet on Paddy Power that Liverpool get beat by Man Utd this weekend, you negative minded twit.

  11. Michael Risley

    Your arrogance is astounding .

Besides the fact I made no mention of dialect , who made you Queen of the Kop or Queen of dialect usage ?

What we do , or how we speak or type has fuck all to do with you , no matter how many languages you are an obnoxious little shit in .

Again this isnt Victorian Britain & you arent Queen Victoria & perhaps you should take a walk around Granby St after 8 pm then come back & insult the Irish , if you aren’t glad to see & hear us that is .

Ya seeI have no obligation to the English language & as I pointed out if it wasnt for the brutal inhuman oppression by The British Monarchy I wouldnt speak it at all .

I suggest if you arent taking this opportunity to reveal yer hatred of the Irish & genuinely care about the use of the English Language that you should take yer Queenish orders & tell yer compatriots in London to quit presenting themselves as a cross between a drug addicted Jamaican criminal & a punch drunk Pakistani who has only just began to speak the language , that is of course if you can find an actual Londoner who speaks English in the first place .
