3) Lucas
Like the man who pips him on this list (see next page), few thought Lucas would have a huge impact this season; with Steven Gerrard seemingly an automatic selection for the anchorman spot. However, Gerrard’s struggled to add the defensive steel and tracking required at times, and Lucas has been brought in a result, enabling our captain to play further forward. The Brazilian has been feisty, combative and disciplined. He doesn’t aid us play scintillating football, but he’s provided a much needed defensive base in midfield – and fans should appreciate the consistent effort he’s put in since arriving at the club seven years ago now.
