The defender announced his delight at the move on Twitter, but Reds fans will perhaps be surprised on hearing what their club has agreed to pay the England international.

The Express report that the right-back will earn £90k-per-week for the duration of his five year deal, which if completed, will see him stay with the Reds until 2020.

The wage makes him one of the most highly paid players at the club, with previous high earners Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson departing this summer on free transfers.

Clyne excelled with Southampton last season, earning himself a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad, but missed out on the Premier League Team of the Season due to Chelsea’s excellent Branislav Ivanovic.

With Johnson exiting and Jon Flanagan a long-term injury victim, manager Brendan Rodgers had to fix the right-back position as a priority this summer.

In Clyne, he’s secured a reliable performer who’s young enough to continue improving – but at £90k-per-week – he’ll surely be expected to hit the ground running.
