Carlisle, who play in League Two and narrowly avoided relegation to non-league football last season, have started their 2015-16 campaign in more encouraging fashion – beating Chesterfield and Queens Park Rangers to reach this stage. However, their league form has remained poor, with no win from their first four games.
The Cumbrians, who are managed by former England international Keith Curle, have played us three times in the past – failing to win any of those games or even score a goal.
Our last meeting came back in 1989, when we won 3-0 away from home in an FA Cup tie. A Steve McMahon brace and a John Barnes goal were enough to see off our opponents on that day and we went on to lift the trophy later that year. We also played them twice during the 1974-75 season, winning 2-0 at home and 1-0 away.
The Liverpool team will likely include many of the names that haven’t featured during the start of our Premier League campaign – including new signings Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan and Divock Origi, who are all still awaiting their respective first-team debuts.
Fringe players such as Kolo Toure, Alberto Moreno and Jordan Rossiter will also be hoping to get their chance, as they seek to prove to Brendan Rodgers that they’re worthy of a place in our first-team squad.
