Liverpool U21s dramatically beaten 3-2 by Manchester United

Our U21 side was beaten 3-2 by bitter rivals Manchester United in a thrilling game at Leigh Sports Village on Monday.

Manchester United raced into a two goal lead thanks to first half strikes from Marouane Fellaini and Nick Powell, but we looked like we’d nicked an unlikely late point as Jerome Sinclair and second half substitute Madger Gomes scored in the 83rd and 85th respectively.

Sinclair then missed a great chance to win it for the Reds when he opted to cut back on to his favoured right foot instead of shooting with his left.

United won the tie in heartbreaking fashion, when in the 89th minute Fellaini held off a challenge from Dan Cleary and played in Sean Goss for the winner.

The Echo said Jordan Rossiter was the bright spot for us. It was the first time he’d featured since a hamstring injury picked up on England duty, but he brilliantly controlled the pace and tempo of the game for the 60 minutes that he was on the pitch.

On the flipside, left-back Jose Enrique took up an unusual position at centre-back and was largely dreadful, gifting two passes straight to United’s attackers in the first half – both of which almost resulted in goals.
