Striker delivers brilliant ‘come-and-get-me’ plea to Klopp

Strikers are difficult to find in the modern day transfer market but Adebayo Akinfenwa believes he can be an option for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.

The life-long Red has made himself available as the additional forward he believes the club needs in order to mount a serious title challenge.

Akinfenwa has grown to be a familiar face in football, especially amongst Liverpool fans after his encounter with hero Steven Gerrard in a FA Cup match during his time with AFC Wimbledon, after which the pair exchanged shirts.

“I think we’re one striker away, I think we’ll be immense for the first half of the season and blow up a bit in the second half but I think we’ll challenge,” Akinfenwa told Squawka.

“Next season, we will be contenders if we can get Virgil van Dijk and one striker. We’re close.”

“Klopp should come and get me! I need pace around me and they have obscene pace up front with [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino, [Mohamed] Salah. If you put me in there and get some crosses in the box I’d score goals.”

“My manager [Gareth Ainsworth] knows I love Liverpool and if they ever came calling he’d have no problems with letting me go.”

The 35-year-old, now of Wycombe Wanderers, shared the opinion of most Reds with regards to the need for another central defender.

After monitoring Virgil van Dijk’s situation at Southampton all summer, Liverpool didn’t make an official bid for the Dutchman having not been given reason to belief his employers were open to offers.

This came after the club had been forced to apologise for an alleged illegal pursuit, which had seemingly been worthy of the Saints making a complaint.

Akinfenwa may fancy a move to Anfield, but it doesn’t seem like his current employers would be prepared to let him go.
