They currently find themselves bottom of the Swiss table on eleven points from 13 games, and following another weekend defeat – Babbel is encouraging every precaution!

“We have to do everything possible to be 100 per cent ready in a short space of time. The players’ wives need to go easy on them,” the 45-year-old told the Mirror.

“I am not forbidding them from having sex. If it regenerates them then that is no problem.

“But the wives need to cut back, and that also means their plans for shopping or cinema trips with their men.

“It is important for the players to eat and sleep well.

“It is OK for them to share their beds with their partners if this makes them sleep better.”

Boxers have always done this in an attempt to build up testosterone in the body, but there’s no actual science which proves it’s effective.

The former German international played for us between 2000 and 2004 and was an integral part of the side that won five trophies in 2001 – but his career wound down prematurely after he got Guillain–Barré syndrome and couldn’t play for over a year.

Still, at his best, he was one of the most impressive right-backs we’ve had during the Premier League era, having excelled at Bayern Munich for six years before Gerard Houllier brought him to Anfield.

We wish him all the luck in rectifying Luzern’s current situation!
