John Aldridge served up a memorable flashpoint without having to score a goal in Saturday’s enthralling 5-5 draw between Liverpool and Bayern Munich legends.
Kop heroes of multiple generations assembled on Merseyside to treat a packed Anfield crowd to a thrilling contest, arranged in aid of the LFC Foundation.
It looked as though a rout could have been on the horizon when Liverpool went 3-0 inside 20 minutes thanks to goals from Dirk Kurt, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler.
Bayern proceeded to score four in response and there was still time for Fowler to level things up at 4-4 with a deflected free-kick before the interval.
Having played for Liverpool in the first half, Xabi Alonso switched sides after the break and fired Bayern back into the lead with a superb free-kick 18 minutes from time.
Bjorn Tore Kvarme became an unlikely scorer as pounced on a loose ball in the box before rifling into the top corner to rescue a draw late on.
Aldridge didn’t manage to get himself on the scoresheet, but did ensure he produced one of the more memorable moments as he stumbled to the ground without coming under contact whilst in pursuit of the ball – much to the amusement of Steve McManaman on the bench.
The former Liverpool striker, who scored 63 goals in 104 appearances for the club, slipped over on two added occasions in a comical three minutes following his introduction to the game.
An entertaining game and light-hearted mood, all for a superb cause.
