Liverpool vs. Paris Saint-Germain – Firmino seals win with dramatic late goal

Roberto Firmino glossed a memorable night at Anfield as he came off the bench to score a stoppage time goal in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Last season’s Champions League finalists took the lead after 30 minutes courtesy of a powerful Daniel Sturridge header.

James Milner doubled the hosts’ lead from the penalty spot six minutes later, before right-back Thomas Meunier pulled a goal back for PSG shortly before half-time with an instinctive volley.

Kylian Mbappe scored an equaliser against the run of play in the 83rd minute, but there was still time for substitute Firmino to fire home a worthy winner.

The Brazilian started the night on the bench on the back off the eye injury that he suffered during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley.

His absence paved the way for Sturridge to make his first Champions League start in six years.

Sturridge’s involvement marked one of two changes to the side that beat Spurs, with Jurgen Klopp also introducing skipper Jordan Henderson in place of Naby Keita.

A familiar first half surge from the Reds saw Virgil van Dijk test Alphonse Areola with a fizzed effort off the surface following Milner’s cross.

PSG responded well to coming under pressure and began to pose their own threat on the counter.

Neymar forced Brazil teammate Alisson into a save with a crisp strike after doing well to slip past Trent Alexander-Arnold inside the box.

Sturridge soon capped Liverpool’s dominance when he redirected Andrew Robertson’s perfectly-weighted cross with a clinical header beyond a motionless Areola.

The French champions threatened an immediate reply when Mbappe fired over after meeting a well-executed corner at the penalty spot.

Milner made it two from 12-yards minutes later after Georginio Wijnaldum had been clipped by a clumsy Juan Bernat challenge.

Liverpool’s lead was halved in the 40th minute when Meunier found the bottom corner with a left-footed volley after Angel Di Maria’s cross had bounced off the leg of Robertson.

Thomas Tuchel’s men subsequently failed to fulfil expectations of a second half siege, with Liverpool’s full-backs commanding both Neymar and Mbappe throughout.

The Reds thought they had regained their two-goal advantage through Salah 12 minutes into the second half, only for the Egyptian’s prodded effort to be ruled out due a foul from Sturridge on Areola in the build-up.

Sturridge then squandered a similar chance to his first half opener as he mistimed his header after being picked out by Alexander-Arnold’s cross.

That would be his best chance to wrap up the points before being replaced by Firmino in the 72nd minute.

PSG drew level seven minutes from time when Mbappe finished off a swift counter after Neymar had picked off a sloppy pass from Salah.

There was still time for one more Anfield eruption as Firmino worked the ball onto his right foot before steering a venomous strike into the far corner for a 91st minute winner.
