Football finance expert says Reds “could spend another £150m” this summer

Leading football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, has claimed Jürgen Klopp “could spend another £150m” this summer should he choose to make use of the Reds’ flourishing cash reserves.

Speaking on a special Blood Red Podcast (via the Echo), Maguire has evaluated our substantial finances and perhaps hinted the Reds could yet go against the accepted notion that big money signings won’t be happening this summer.

“Liverpool finished second in the Premier League and actually generated more money from TV from the Premier League than Manchester City because they were on television live more often,” said Maguire.

“Combine that with the additional revenue from the Champions League, and Liverpool’s cash reserves are high.

“They can sign practically anybody they choose. If Jurgen Klopp feels there are still one or two places missing in terms of the squad, they could spend £50m-£60m on a player today, absolutely.

“Plus the fact that Liverpool don’t need to sell and players don’t want to leave.

“They had issues with Coutinho, Suarez and Sterling, but I don’t think those issues will arise again for a good while, so they are in a very strong position in the market.”

“They could spend another £150m if they wanted to this summer,” Maguire claimed.

“I think Jurgen Klopp is very pleased with the squad and he’s also had some absolute bargains in the likes of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold who came through the academy, and those two alone will have saved £100m.

“So it’s not just about spending big, it’s spending smart as well, which you’ve got to give the club credit for.”

Now, of course, it should be mentioned that Maguire is simply using his economic nous to explain that Klopp has the potential to spend big, not that he necessarily will.

This insight chimes with other pieces and theories of the will-they-won’t they of this summer’s transfer window; in contrast, David Maddock has suggested we won’t see big money moves.

Equally, John Barnes has insisted Liverpool need only supplement the squad, discouraging a “£100m” signing for the first-team.

That there are so many converging opinions on the subject is hardly surprising, since the transfer window sustains itself on rumour and conjecture.

What is for certain, though, is that the Reds are Champions League winners with a financial profile in rude health – if we wanted to make a marquee signing we could probably afford to.

The question is, will Klopp follow up the £1.3 million signing of Sepp van den Berg with something a lot more high profile this summer, or wait to dip into the club’s significant funds when the time is right?
