Van Dijk, Robbo, Oxlade-Chamberlain: How the Reds could line up against Dortmund with an XI for each half

Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the USA kicks off at 1am tonight UK time, with several players set to get minutes for the first time this pre-season, and several more youngsters set to be given another chance to shine.

Paul Glatzel, who was impressive against Tranmere Rovers, picked up an injury at Prenton Park, so he won’t be involved (it’s not clear as of yet how significant his injury is), but the likes of Bobby Duncan and Yasser Larouci could feature.

Simon Mignolet will have to play in goal with Vite Jaros and Caoimhin Kelleher both injured (Polish stopper Jakub Ojrzynski has also travelled, as has Dan Atherton, but Mignolet is more likely to play the whole match, with both of them very inexperienced).

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will continue to get minutes as he comes back from that long-term injury setback, though new signing Sepp van den Berg is still needing clearance so he won’t play.

Adam Lallana will play a significant chunk of the match – perhaps in his new position as a number six – while Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gini Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk could all get their first action of the new campaign having been given extended time off after international duty.

Andy Robertson has been out recently having suffered a hand injury, but he could feature as well having been named in the squad. The Scotland captain will still need strapping but he should be cleared to play.

Jurgen Klopp is likely to continue the trend of picking two XIs – one for each half of the game – as he has done in both of the first two friendlies this summer, so not all of the 28 players who have travelled will get time on the pitch.

Potential XI number one:
Mignolet, Clyne, Gomez, Lovren, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilson, Brewster, Kent

Potential XI number two:
Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Larouci, Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Duncan, Origi, Jones
