It looks to me that Roy wants us to hold on to the ball and stretch the opposition midfield. I like this, I preach this myself, patient build up, draw defences out and pass into the gaps when they appear.
What formation are we playing though, I have noticed that Jovanovic is not tracking back on the left, which he would do if he was winger, suggesting to me he is playing as 2nd support man to the striker, 4-1-2-2-1 with the right side and left side using different tactics. Johnson from the back on the right, Jovanovic on the left from Midfield.
Having Gerrard back in the middle makes us look solid and controlled, especially when defending. It is clear see that Roy has implemented the 2 lines of 4 when defending. Hopefully this will take us back to the stingy goals against stats (see 10man draw against the Gooners today.) that we saw in the Houllier era, coupled with a better attacking force of Torres, Cole, Jovanovic and Gerrard.
I know it’s premature after one to game to say this, but I have to say “we will be in the hunt!”.
