Ta Jamie Lad!

As a self-proclaimed Blue, who dreamed of scoring for Everton against Liverpool at Anfield and being able to boast the unenviable record of having scored more times against us than for us, it was fitting that yesterday’s testimonial against our neighbours from across the Park saw Jamie Carragher net for both teams, both coming from the spot.

With 636 appearances to his name, Jamie is probably one of the last of his breed, a one-club man. When he scored from midfield on his first start for the Redmen, no one imagined that his subsequent 633 outings would yield just 4 more goals for our club, the less said about those against us the better! He currently stands 7th in the club’s list for most appearances, just 2 behind the Anfield Iron, Tommy Smith. Reaching Ian Callaghan’s milestones of 857 total and 640 league appearances, even with all the best will in the world, is beyond Jamie, but he should leave the club comfortably in 2nd place on that list. He already holds our record for most European appearances.

Jamie’s versatility has certainly contributed to his number of appearances but so has his determination, and quality. Now, he will only ever be seen on our team sheet as a centre back. His centre-half partnership with Sami Hyypia has gone down as one of the best our club has ever seen.

Despite his deprived and underprivileged upbringing as a Blue, Jamie has gone on to show us that he bleeds red LFC blood. When you do hang up your boots, we will miss your deafening shouts to, and at, your defensive colleagues, as much as we will miss your last ditch tackles and blocks, always willing to put your body on the line in protection of our goal. Ta Jamie Lad!
