You’ll never walk alone

Tomorrow’s match is probably the most important Merseyside derby for years. With both Liverpool and Everton struggling in the league and the most open Premiership in years, a win seems even more vital than usual. There’s a lot more than local bragging rights at stake. As well as the three points that would take us a bit further from the relegation zone we desperately need the confidence that only a good result can bring.

The only way we are going to climb the table is by sticking together, not letting our heads drop and winning games. After the match against Blackpool there was obvious frustration and disappointment but it was Kenny’s first game in charge. Forget the cup game against United. He had only just got back from holiday and had no time to work with the players.

There are a few reasons to be optimistic. The early goal against Blackpool was a statement of intent – it’s just a shame they equalised so quickly as that sapped the confidence from our players. The appointment of Steve Clarke is a good one. We may well buy some new players this month. Our team line-ups and substitutions now demonstrate a positive mentality. Our club has finally got a manager who the fans can all get behind. The ninety per cent who wanted Hodgson out, myself included, have got what we wanted. In his place we now have a Liverpool legend, a symbol, someone who can unite everyone at the club.

Of course that doesn’t mean there’s a quick fix. It’ll take time to sort things out properly. Kenny has to decide what players he’ll put his faith in and what system suits them best. It’s then up to those players to give everything they’ve got and realise what it means to play for a club like Liverpool. That’s their job. As supporters, our job is to support. Now is not the time to desert the club. Now is the time to live up the tag of the best supporters in the world.

Tomorrow’s game will be tough. No Stevie. No Carra. But we are still Liverpool. So whether we win, lose or draw I hope we show the spirit that we’ve shown so often in the past.

As the song goes:

Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart

And you’ll never walk alone.
