The Day After!

Posted by

The reactions that poured in yesterday after the dismal performance against West Ham saw the Liverpool supporters divided yet again: while one portion of fans felt utterly disgusted with the performance, the other train of thought merely brushed it off as ‘having a day off’ and that the Reds would come out of it stronger than ever before.

In reality both positions are in fact right! It was a very bad all round performance by the Reds, but there is no doubt that they will come out guns blazing at the next occasion, especially because the next occasion is a home game against Manchester United.

Many commented that it was nonsense to even consider the Reds to make 4th spot in the first place, but then the math did not and still does not make that goal impossible to achieve. So if it’s possible, should we not have a go as it? Others claimed that given our horrendous start to the season, we should not have high expectations and really look forward to next season. But that is what we said last season, no? Some said we should concentrate on going for silverware and concentrate on Europa League glory, but may I permit myself to remind everyone that we ended up 7th and with no silverware and if we apply that same attitude there is a very good chance it will happen…..again!

Apart from Suarez to a certain extent, no one survived the wrath of the fans’ anger and dismay, because in truth it may not be about getting the three points and keep on hoping for CL football, but the display, if we have to be honest with ourselves, was way below par to say the least. Many urged a summer clear-out, some urged the Club to push the risings stars faster into the team, while others simply hoped the Club will spend big come next transfer window.

Are we all behind Kenny Dalglish and Co? Of course we are! Have we suddenly lost faith in a new era? Of course not! Do we have a right to criticize the squad when they churn out such a shabby performance? Bloody right we do! Because it was not about West Ham having their game of the season, it was about us not playing one.

Work your magic Kenny!

  1. One thing that gets lost in all this hand wringing about our own performance, is that West Ham played a blinder. They were at home, fighting for Prem survival and they pressed and harried us off the ball for 90 mins.

We weren’t good, no doubt about it, but a couple of really bad defensive errors cost us 2 of the 3 goals. Against a typical West Ham performance we might have got away with a draw, but that wasn’t a typical West Ham performance.

  2. So, if a team actually has the audacity to hustle and harry Liverpool in a game like West Ham did the supporters are just supposed to accept the defeat, what a load of rubbish! The 3 goals Reina left in yesterday were all Reina’s fault once again. He is as committed in goal as Torres was at centreforward this season. It is fact that Reina and his agent approached Man Utd and Arsenal over a transfer. Gerrard,Kuyt,Carragher,Reina and several others should be transferred in the summer.

  3. One bad game and we’re saying we should transfer gerrard i mean he is our captain and he is still one of the best midfielders in the world im’ backing him to score against manure

  4. I am sorry, too many excuses, the players get paid a lot of money, let them earn it.If any of them wishes to go let them. If Reina wants to go so be it , he has not been the same since scoring for Chelsea in the 4-4 draw. I see the likes of Blackpool sinking us, Chelsea etc, they give it their all EVERY single time, why can’t we. Kenny WILL turn things around , I don’t care, so long as mathematically is possible to qualify for CL we should do our level best, another ten /or hopefully a few more matches and the season is over, lets give it a real go.
WE ARE LFC, NEVER SAY DIE, REMEMBER ISTANBUL?
Walk on, lets sink manure and stop them beating our record.

  5. Spurs fan in peace, you can’t win em all. Overall you are improving and I think next year you could be challenging big time with a couple of new faces. You’ve got Carrol to come yet he’s going to be great for u guys, wish we had him. You have been linked with Adam and Kranjcar, these two would be great signings. I wouldl be sorry to lose kranjcar he should be playing in our first team, but Arry does things his way. By the way my eldest son is a Liverpool fan so good luck Sunday!

  6. Goalie: Gulasci. Rightback: Carragher. centrebacks: Kygriakos and Agger. Leftback: Wilson. Rightwing: Johnson. Leftwing: Maxi. Centremidfield: Lucas and Meireles. Kuyt behind Suarez up front.

  7. Come on Kenny! You can’t be serious can you? I am not criticizing you bud, and respect your views, but….your selection is kind of mindboggling.

  8. It happens to most teams…after a game in the champions League or Europa Cup, the players’ form drops sharply. I don’t know why it happens because players should be able to play two matches in three or four days, but it happens.

Maybe it will be better against Man Utd.

  9. Interesting Kenny, and the score?
Paul, if we cannot get 4th spot and it is a very tall order, I hope Spurs get it, also then it would be great to knock out Chelsea out of Europa Cup!
Still cannot believe Shrek got off with elbowing someone in the head, well done all you stupid Maure supporting refs, didn’t the goal line move back by two feet when Spurs scored at whisky nose’s theater of crap couple of years ago?

  10. The key to beating Utd is to attack them down the wings and the channels between their fullbacks and central defenders while at the same time not allowing your fullbacks to be left one on one against their wingers. Liverpool can win the game 1-0 but they will need Kuyt to drop back a lot into central midfield to balance out the three that Utd will play there. Utd will go with a 4-5-1.

  11. Sharde,
Hope we can hang on to 4th it’s going to be very tight, we need Bale and VDV back and a settled defence. We need to get 4th as it will be tougher again next year (with you lot up there as well) so this could be our last chance for a while.
We always get robbed by manu and their 12th man but that goal not being given a few years ago was scandalous. Umm, just thinking about it makes my blood boil so give em a good hiding Sunday!

  12. When we lose everyone comments including other football clubs fan..but if we win, only the true liverpool fans rejoices.lost all the game this season for all i care…I will still shout for LFC…even if i have to walk alone…Come on your REDS!!

  13. At the end of the day if we haven’t got enough quality or guts in the squad to turn out 11 players capable of beating bottom 3 Wigan at home or bottom 3 West Ham away then we need to have a major clear out & bring in a whole new squad .

We were 2’nd best at West Ham , they out fought us & showed us up to be the excuse making limp wristed pansy boys we have been since we won the FA cup last .

I dont care how good a players pedigree is or how many trophies he has won or who the manager is or how good he is because no manager can get dishonest pay check collecting rent boys to perform if there is an excuse culture within the club that has left us with too many players that are too comfortable at the club & know its going to be damn near impossible to get them out if they dont want to leave .

I’m not going to name names but we have players left over from Houlliers days when top 4 with a league cup or FA cup was considered success , we have players signed by Benitez who captain their country & perform for their country’s but betrayed Benitez & downed tools on him in his last season & that same squad of players refused to perform for Hodgson .

Too many players are too comfortable at our club & it is showing in our performances , in our results & in our expectations .

Hell , people were seriously wanting to try a 16 year old who has never played a senior game against a top Czech side in the first leg of the knock out stages of the Europa ! Talk about desperation !

If they cant get results under Kenny Dalglish then its proof the managers haven’t been to blame coz if anyone can Kenny can & he is a man with a track record of building championship winning & cup winning sides over a very short period of time .

No player will be missed if Kenny says we dont need him & its time for the Yanks to put £400 to £500 million on his desk & say to Kenny …

” Heres a 6 year contract & heres your transfer budget , now go do what you do best & build us a Championship winning Squad ”

No more Cheapskate Arsenal style bullshit from Comolli , its top dollar for top players & no more penny pinching excuses .

    The time is Now !

  14. I think the criticisms of the play in this game have all been a bit harsh. People get too emotional. This game was a one off. Sometimes things just don’t go your way. West Ham are a better team than their league position indicates. From what I watched i thought we dominated much of the play. Its just once you don’t get that first goal then its always an up hill climb, and you run the risk after that of being beat by more than one. That’s football! STFU

  15. Robert ,

Our last 2 league games have been against bottom 3 sides . One game at home & one game away to a side bottom of the league & bottom of the league all season , the table is telling no lies with over 2/3 of all games played .

At the very worst we should have taken 4 points from those games even using reserves & youth teamers .

If we had any guts & ambition to make the top 4 & or guts & ambition to make sure Kenny gets the job permanently we should have taken 6 points & boosted our goal difference significantly especially with the amount of highly paid highly experienced senior internationals we sent out .

    But we didnt .

We took 1 point & Kenny was 100% correct , we got what we deserved & our players need to have a look at themselves & be honest with themselves .

They are an embarrassment to a 5 time European cup winning club & Kenny said as much in his post match comments .

    Long live the king .

  16. @ Kenny, u spoke well, but honestly your judgement on Steve G is harsh. Take emotions out of this but a well dedicated, discipline and determined lads like Gee n Carra deserves better than this judgement. No player in the world can give his team a 100% performance at all time.

It’s about time we appreciate our lads (not to say not to criticize them well they go wrong) n multivate them when it matters most. We all know how costive it is to get a second best from our players when we know they could have done better but that doesn’t build us a platform to cast them out completely. Would not drink water again if your loved one die by water? Of course no. We use what we have to our advantage and not to our disadvantage.

Concerning saturday’s big game against manure, we can only triumph if Gerrard take his very position. Despite our current position we’re the better side and we’ll prove that come weekend. We’ll find ways and means to beat them and kick out their hopes and dreams…… 4eva YNWA.

  17. Always a pleasure to read your article Tonio. You have riled up the readers again, though, you may not have intended it. Welcome @Paul of the Spurs (hopefully not the octopus). Liverpool, to be honest, doesn’t have enough quality at the moment to sustain a challenge for the premiership. King Kenny has done tremendously well in view of his disposals. Some may have to go in the summer but let the King decide. Our reserves & youth are all waiting in the wings. The likes of Suso, Pacheco, Ince, Coady, Sterling, to name a few, will be more than ready in 1 or 2 years, quite possibly next season. In them, we have a pool of the most talented and exciting youngsters in the country. So, I am not worried. I feel we will still salvage our season and next season we will conquer the Premiership and Europe once again. P.S : Paul the octopus said so.

  18. To those fans who still have faith in Gerrard, I have to say that sentimentality to aging players whose legs have clearly gone has no place at a club that aspires to win Premier League titles. He gets paid 150 grand a week, for that money 2 new players could be paid and the 15 to 20 million Liverpool might still fool the likes of Real to pay this summer would help to boost Liverpool’s transfer budget in the summer. Gerrard had his pals with him up in the stand on Thursday night watching the Sparta game. These were likely some of the same pals that were with him in the nightclub the night of the 5-1 win at Newcastle. One can likely assume that Gerrard and his pals went drinking again on Thursday night after the game, this was great preparation for playing in a crucial Premier League game at 1.30 on the Sunday at West Ham. This is not the example that the club captain should be giving.

  19. I think you don´t understand what Stevie means to the club and the fans. Ridicolous, sorry.

  20. It is thanks to fans like Gloria living still on 2005 and 2006 that Liverpool keeps stagnating. Far better players than Gerrard were shown the exit door by the likes of Bob Paisley in order for the team to progress. Gerrard gets paid 150 grand a week and what has he done this season to earn that? The team needs wingers and more pace, mobility, running power and muscle to start winning Premier League titles again.

  21. Kenny yer on the ball in so much that certain players need to leave but yer putting it across wrong , the foreigners cant grasp what yer saying .

Fact is that in football players need to move on both for the good of the club & the good of the player otherwise things get stale like we have done & on top of that the dressing room has had so many owners & managers this past year they look to the most stable part of the club they know & that is Gerrard & Carra who both came through under an average French Manager with average ambitions for a massive club & subsequently neither have ever won a league or shown or expressed any burning desire to win a league .

Because of that we can bring in the best players in the world but if the tone is being set by long term players happy to go through the motions & win the odd knock out cup or finish 4’th 5’th 6’th or 7’th then no foreigner is gonna rock the boat & try to turn the changing room politics on their heads .

Fact is that on their day we have some very good players who would do fantastic for whatever club they move on to , but they have gone stale for us & are too comfortable at the club & they need to be replaced .

Keep on Kenny but dont forget to break it right down for the foreigners otherwise they will think its a personal gripe & keep on trusting the tabloids instead of genuine supporters .
