Defending Anfield

We have been blessed over the years with some of the best defenders this country has ever seen, but right now we are in trouble, the problem lies in the lack of quality cover, what would happen if Agger, Carragher and Skrtel get injured or suspended, what reliable, quality alternatives do we have.

The answer is none really, yes we have Wilson and Kelly both good young prospects but not able to deal with the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City as a partnership, Kyrgiakos is simply an accident waiting to happen but cannot be criticised for willingness or effort, so what can be done with only two weeks away from the start of the season, as much as we all have are own preferences of who we would like to sign, the fact is it may not happen until January.

Why? Well we still have players who we cannot sell or are making life difficult for the club to sell them due to their unrealistic wage requests, personal terms demands, or just plan stubbornness to move on, it may sound resentful towards players like Jovanovic, Cole, N’Gog, Aquilani, El Zhar and Polusen but we need to move these players on so that we can go back into the transfer market and obtain a good quality Central Defender also a top quality Left Back.

If Liverpool could sell at least 2 or 3 of the above players we could realistically buy the required defenders we need, Scott Dann is a good prospect especially now that Birmingham’s financial situation has been exposed and are vulnerable at this moment in time, Newcastle’s left back Enrique is also another good prospect both of these are proven in the Premier League, there are others just as good or better that play in the Premiership, but not all are available at present, or does Dalglish take a chance on a foreign player with no experience of the English game, hopeful that they adjust to the Premiership quickly.

The fact remains that our defensive frailties has the potential to cost us dearly in our pursuit for a Champion League spot, Liverpool’s past success was built on defensive superiority and stability, building from the back, Hansen & Lawrenson were the prime example of a defensive partnership that had perfect understanding because they constantly played together and were not subjected to a needless rotation policy, it didn’t matter if it was a League Cup match or a regular Saturday afternoon game, there names were the first on the team sheet.

If we are to achieve our aim of a Champion League place then we have to have quality Central Defenders and full backs, and a regular, stable line up, we need to look forward, Jamie Carragher has only two seasons at best left in him, Agger is injury prone and Skrtel does not pair well without Carragher or Agger, so we have a dilemma that needs addressing now, am sure Dalglish and FSG are fully aware of this situation and will confront it at the nearest opportunity both when financial and player availability is right.

If we wait until January to bring in new defensive players then sadly it could be too late for a realistic shot at a Champions League place, we may on the other hand be well placed if we can keep a stable back four and escape injuries, when Dalglish sets out his plans to Defending Anfield he needs to address to current players he has and act with speed, he must try and resolve the current issue of selling unwanted players and securing our defensive line.

    1. Aquilani is a middle of the road midfielder at best . had a few good minutes in aisa against poor teams .. If he was that good Juva would have fronted the cash for him after his season their . not good enought for liverpool fc,

      1. but he ended up being liverpools best player in da pre season so far doesnt that tell u somtin is right about him..seek n tired of illiterates slating dis guy..he is da closest tin to gerrard in our midfield

        1. Oh please Aquilani best player of pre season so far.. its not hard to look good against 11 taxi drivers is it

  1. I’m sure with a writing class and some hard work, one day you can learn to write well. Otherwise, why not stick to Twitter?

  2. This same defense under Dalglish and Clarke gave up 1.06 goals per game in league games and that was without Johnson and Agger for most of it. I hardly think it needs major changes.

Just to compare, Manchester United gave up 1 goal per game in the same amount of league matches at the end of the season.

  3. This whole thing was badly handled by KD he went and bought midfielders to start off with which wasn’t our weakest part of the team. All we needed was one and then he should have bought defenders before doing anything else. He should have also have realised the deadwood wouldn’t be easy to sell. He committed money on a crap forward, we could have had two decent ones for what he shelled out. I support the team fully no matter who is in the team but we will not get into the top 4 with the crap he has bought and what we are stuck with

    1. totally agree with you…he handled it all badly but for the andy carrol deal its understandable given the situation that time…apart from the young players and aquilani…i think that whole liverpool squad against galatasaray have to leave..including joe cole…i cant believe ppl want aquilani to leave e.g john fucking aldridge and he thinks joe cole played better when clearly joe cole wassimply lost and useless

    2. come on….i cant understand why all of us are worrying this much about our team, our policy to buy English players, Andy Carroll.
andy carroll> to buy him was actually a positive intention more than anything else because that stupid left for glory and we bought the best available at that time, prem league top scorer!!!! we bought him, end of story, and dont belive he is crap.
policy to buy English players> we had to accept the fact that we are not playing champions league at the moment. so all the big name players from outside england wont be interested in us unless they have an injury problum(like aquilani-remember he was a big name player then!!!!!). or pure greed(like jova) so kenny moved to British talent were Liverpool is so big (in most of the places liverpool has more fan following than another prem league team in England)irrespective of champions league, that is it.

  4. Agree the two key positions still needed to be filled are LB and CB. Ideally I’d like a back-up striker and possibly a right winger ( although think we’ll be ok in that position till Jan with Kuyt, Henderson or Meireles able to cover ).

Removing the deadwood is still a big problem, but am relieved we’ve at least got decent players in first and can worry about that later, although it may still be hampering our financial ability to bring more players in.

From the dealings we’ve seen so far I think we’re on track and will see a few more changes before the end of the transfer window, but we may still need another 12 months to knock the squad into the shape needed to make a title challenge. I still think we have an excellent chance of a top 4 finish this year ( and may even surprise with a title challenge ) if we get off to a flyer and Suarez will be an incredible inspiration. Arsenal look the most vulnerable to me to drop out of the top 4 and am confident we can displace them or Chelsea.

  5. Well you’re not really telling us anything we don’t already know there Brian, but I feel you’ve made some mistakes here.

    1) As a matter of fact Martin Kelly is more than adept at handling Utd, City, Chelsea et al and should be considered a first team starter at CB as soon as possible (ahead of Carragher).

    2) The transfer window reaches a climax at the end of August, not the 13th. I’m sure Kenny and Comolli are doing their upmost best to secure at least two players to strengthen the back. Who’s to say what goes on behind closed doors?

    3) How on earth can you possibly rank Aquilani in amongst the other names mention there? Kenny has said himself the return of Aquilani would feel like a new signing. With Gerrard running the risk of hitting the stretcher every five minutes anyone would have to be mental to suggest getting rid of him if we can avoid it.

    4) Why hang everything on Dann and Enrique? Is it because they are the only two realistic names you have seen touted in the papers in the last few days and can’t think of any more? Baines, Godin, Perriera, Cahill, Sakho … all in with a shout. And why would you fear foreign defenders?

    5) Last paragraph – grammar all over the place. It’s almost as if you’d given up on your own arguments.

    1. you are spot on kat….u just summarised everytin ive always wanted to say…i dont rate enrique scott dann is wack..just another skrtel he is..why on earth are we all about english based players..by now we shud av had mata…do not ever in yourlife include aquilani in dt list unless u are dumb and retarded and blind to see quality..poulsen jova cole insua degen el zhar ngog(not rele)MUST leave asap..bring in pereira and godin simple!!!!!

  6. Kat, to suggest Aquilani is less injury prone than Gerrard is ridiculous!! Playing 30 league games in Italy is a lot different to the lemurs league! I would get shut of him and the other dross prepared to earn massive wages and playing reserve football all season.

    Ps. Kelly ahead of Carra??..priceless!

  7. to tell the truth clark has been supporting cole.. but i dnt believe there is even a small qualioty left in him after the friendlies.. he cant even play football even to the range of a youngster… shit! we should definetely sell him.. another case is poulsen and ngog!!
we should buy a good cb such as dann/cahill/or give chance to kelly..
another is leftback as we cant rely fully on insua.. go for enrique..
another is triker, give chance to pachecho, the kid has talent.

  8. i cant understand why all of us are worrying this much about our team, our policy to buy English players, Andy Carroll.
