LFC Player Ratings

GK: Pepe Reina – Produced a magnificent save to stop Mulumbu scoring a
spectacular goal late in the match, but could do little to prevent
West Brom taking the lead through Gareth McAuley and was let down by
his defence for Lukaku’s goal. 6/10

RB: Glen Johnson – Great work by Johnson gave Liverpool two early
opportunities, only for both to be called for offside. An excellent
ball from Johnson set up a goalscoring chance for Suarez in the first
half. Johnson’s defending was also superb, keeping Shane Long quiet.
His second half performance was a lot more subdued, struggling to make
any of those dangerous crosses that he produced in the first half.
6/10

CB: Jamie Carragher – Looked very solid at the back, winning several
crucial headers to neutralize West Brom’s aerial threat. Showed why
Skrtel is being kept out of the first team at the moment. 7/10

CB: Daniel Agger – Headed over while unmarked from a 23rd minute
corner, and missed another glorious chance 32 minutes into the match.
Lost McAuley in the corner that resulted in West Brom taking the lead,
and lost Lukaku who went on to seal victory for the Baggies. 5/10

LB: Jose Enrique – Defended bravely to prevent two goalscoring
opportunities for Shane Long. After a promising start, Enrique became
sloppy with his passing, giving the ball away on several occasions
while under minimal pressure. 5/10

CM: Lucas Leiva – Passed the ball around nicely, and won the ball back
for his team with typical enthusiasm on his 200th appearance in a
Liverpool shirt. Contained the creative force of Mulumbu and Yacob
nicely for the first 80 minutes. 7/10

CM: Steven Gerrard – Distributed the ball excellently as usual, and he
could well have had a few assists were it not for the wastefulness of
Shelvey and Suarez. Nearly gave Liverpool the lead in the 69th minute
with a powerful shot just inside the area. Had a chance to put
Liverpool 1-0 up from the spot, but he chose to aim for the bottom
right hand corner, and his effort was saved by Ben Foster. 7/10

LM: Jordan Henderson – Pressed very well in the first half, but
struggled to get him in the right positions. Had a chance to give
Liverpool the lead with an improvised effort on goal, but his 51st
minute shot was saved. Was substituted 59 minutes into the match after
a relatively poor performance, considering his recent form. 6/10

RM: Stewart Downing – Struggled to win the ball back for his team
early on, but improved a lot as the first half went on. Downing nearly
gave Liverpool the lead with a powerful long range effort which was
only just saved by Ben Foster. Downing won two corners for his team,
and was arguably the best player in the first half. Had another
opportunity to score at the start of the second half, prompting a
large roar of approval from the home fans. Showed passion that was
never evident in his first 18 months at Anfield, yet was substituted
off for new signing Philippe Coutinho. 8/10

CAM: Jonjo Shelvey – Made some good touches, and had the ball in the
back of the net before the offside call was made. Nearly forced an own
goal after a great cross from Suarez. Missed a brilliant chance to
score in the 53rd minutes, and he was substituted off a few minutes
later. 6/10

ST: Luis Suarez – Had a quiet opening 15 minutes, but showed his
immense dribbling skill to give Liverpool a decent opportunity to open
the scoring from a 19th minute corner. Blazed over from just outside
the box near the end of the first half. Earned Liverpool a penalty
which they failed to convert. His night was epitomised when he
recieved a yellow card for sarcastically applauding referee Jon Moss
in the dying moments of the match. Overall, he looked isolated up
front and would have benefited from Borini or Sterling to have played
from the start. 6/10

Substitutes:

RM: Raheem Sterling – Initially offered more threat, but was closed
down well and ultimately frustrated. 6/10

ST: Fabio Borini – Forced a great save from Ben Foster minutes after
his introduction. Couldn’t find the right position to score from a
tight angle after Gerrard’s powerful shot was parried away. Offered
Suarez support in his short time on the field, but still searches for
his first Premier League goal. 6/10

LM: Philippe Coutinho – Had little time to make an impact on the game.
Won a corner for his new team very late on. 6/10
