Potential Simon Mignolet replacement lined up…
Liverpool are apparently already in discussions with the agent of Manchester United target Sergio Romero, reports the Express.
The 27-year-old plays for Sampdoria in Serie A, but is available on a free transfer at the end of the season because his contract is expiring next summer.
This means he’d either cost a small transfer fee in January, or be available on a Bosman free transfer in time for the start of the next season.
Romero was brilliant for beaten finalists Argentina in the World Cup, but has actually struggled to get in the Sampdoria team for most of this season.
He’s currently first-choice, but has only made five starts in Serie A since August, and is happy to leave the Italians as a result.
Romero is probably not the long-term solution to problems. While he’s a good shot-stopper (as is Mignolet), he doesn’t offer a commanding presence in goal, and is shaky when crosses are delivered into the box as well.
