Liverpool’s ten best bargain buys of the 21st century – with Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can included

4) Xabi Alonso (from Real Sociedad, £10.5m)

One of the heroes of Liverpool’s Champions League success in 2005, and undoubtedly one of the best midfielders – along with Steven Gerrard – to play Premier League football for the Reds. We doubled our money on him as well.

3) Martin Skrtel (from Zenit Saint Petersburg, £6.5m)

Since the departures of Carragher and Agger, the Slovakian has taken over the role of Liverpool’s defensive leader. He’s been in fine form so far this season, and has been a solid servant to the Reds over the years.

2) Pepe Reina (from Villarreal, £6m)

The best Liverpool goalkeeper of the Premier League era. The Spaniard made almost 400 appearances for the club, and was an extremely popular figure among the Anfield faithful. Another star that arguably left too soon.
