Haven’t we had enough bad luck for one week? Seemingly not, with the Premier League appointing Martin Atkinson as the referee for our upcoming Premier League clash against Queens Park Rangers.
Atkinson has a fairly unenviable reputation among our supporters at present, having overseen our Merseyside derby draw with Everton – featuring Phil Jagielka’s late equaliser – and both defeats to Manchester United so far this season, with the latter including a controversial red card for captain Steven Gerrard.
His actions also went down badly among the Anfield faithful last season. Watch below as he fails to award Everton forward Kevin Mirallas so much as a yellow card, after this challenge against former Reds striker Luis Suarez:
His appointment is unlikely to brighten the mood of many a Liverpool supporter after a seven-day period which has already included a frustrating draw with West Bromwich Albion and Tuesday’s defeat to Hull City.
Here’s how supporters have reacted both today and in the past on social media:
Great. We got Martin Atkinson on Saturday as our referee against QPR. Maybe it’s a good thing that I have my SAT that morning…
