Liverpool ‘submit offer’ for 20-goal La Liga striker; three-way transfer battle rages

The Reds will continue to battle Arsenal and Atletico Madrid for Villarreal striker Luciano Vietto, with the Liverpool Echo suggesting that we have already submitted a £14m bid for the young Argentine.

Vietto has scored 20 goals in all competitions during his first season with the Yellow Submarine and his success has attracted the interest of a number of Europe’s biggest clubs, including ourselves.

The Echo reference Spanish newspaper AS, who claim that Villarreal will fight tooth and nail to keep their prize asset, whose stock is only likely to rise if he continues the kind of form he’s shown over the last twelve months.

Vietto would prefer to stay in Spain, according to the report, but with Liverpool and Arsenal willing to pay more it seems that his resolve could be tested. The 21-year-old is eager to play European football but will have to make do with a place in the Europa League if he stays put.

Unfortunately, we can’t offer him a Champions League spot, after our disappointing season, but the Echo believes that we could still convince him to make the move with the guarantee of more regular first-team football.

It’s probably best not to read too much into this – the rumours surrounding Vietto have been spun time and again for several weeks now. However, the sheer number of these kind of claims suggest that there is at least some degree of truth in the rumoured move.

We’re in desperate need of a striker and we’d be foolish to dismiss our links to an affordable young player with an impressive CV. If we could get a move such as this done, it would arguably be preferable to signing the likes of Christian Benteke for around the £30m mark (via The Independent).
