Following yesterday’s transfer deadline day, it’s perhaps more poignant and telling than ever.
On the first day of Liverpool’s pre-season tour of America, the squad visited Alcatraz – and Mamadou Sakho barged in on Jurgen Klopp’s interview, asking him, ‘How long could you stay here?’
Klopp’s reply appeared to be in jest, but when you consider what’s gone on since, it had elements of his true feelings, clearly.
‘I don’t have to think about it. You should think about it. Because only one of us came late last night for our departure in Liverpool. We’re here because we want to leave Mama here,’ the manager replied.

Since then, Klopp sent Sakho home from tour and told him to find a new club on loan for the season. The defender refused, and is now expected to spend the campaign on the sidelines – for the foreseeable future at least.
