The man who could solve Liverpool’s defensive woes was at Anfield last night

We expect to see Joe Gomez on Liverpool’s bench tomorrow night against Middlesbrough, the first time he will have been selected by Jurgen Klopp in a match-day squad due to terrible luck with injuries.

The 19-year-old has been a regular for the Under-23s in recent weeks though and has thoroughly impressed; and was faultless in the 3-2 win over Arsenal last night.

According to Neil Jones of the Echo, Gomez was taken off at half-time, and not because of injury, suggesting he’ll head to ‘Boro tomorrow.

With Dejan Lovren suffering cramp on Sunday, the Croat will likely miss out, meaning Ragnar Klavan should step up and the teenage Englishman will be named as a sub.

Gomez is prodigiously talented and we hope he has a long-term future in our side, potentially alongside Joel Matip. He began last season in the starting XI at left-back, but he’s a central defender by trade and has all the attributes Klopp requires: he’s tall, composed and excellent stepping out of defence and into midfield.

Hopefully, we’ll see him start games at the beginning of next year, with the early rounds of the FA Cup played at the start of January.
