Like all of Liverpool’s players in January (bar none), Gini Wijnaldum did not perform to expectations.
But on Tuesday, he showed more than glimpses of what he can do in his roaming central midfield role.
The Dutchman is very tidy, but Jurgen Klopp and the fanbase feel he can offer more creatively – hence why the boss told our 26-year-old off at half-time for not getting into the box enough (Metro).
Against Chelsea, Wijnaldum shone in the second-half, scoring a goal, but also providing a physical, pressing presence. Virtually all of Liverpool’s players from the backline up are better when they play on the front foot and try to win back possession, and Gini is no exception.
Now Mane’s back, we’d like to see him in a midfield three with Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson.
