This is a turn-up for the books…
According to Spanish outlet Diario Gol, Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has a ‘weakness’ for Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, our prodigal teenage centre-back.
We’re surprised the Frenchman is even aware of Gomez, who was out of action for 15 months and has had very little first-team football since his return.
In total, Gomez has three FA Cup appearances this term, one of which was the dreadful home defeat to Wolves, although his talent has never been questioned.
The report suggests Real Madrid will overhaul their squad this summer, and with Pepe moving to the Chinese Super League, there’s room for another young centre-back to arrive.
Gomez is currently behind the likes of Lucas and Ragnar Klavan in our defensive pecking order, so we’d be surprised if this report is genuine – although it seems like an odd one for a publication to fabricate.
The 19-year-old has all the attributes to get to the very top. He’s tall, skilful and composed, but needs a full summer of friendlies with the first-team and will hopefully be in contention to start in 2017/18. If Real Madrid are still interested in 2018, he’s doing something right!
