Dejan Lovren has today signed a bumper new Liverpool deal which could keep him at the club until 2022.
The Croat arrived on Merseyside in 2014 and has endured/enjoyed mixed times at the club. His debut campaign was horrible, but he did score the winner against Borussia Dortmund and has emerged as somewhat of a leader in the backline – despite inconsistencies.
However, after a poor show at the weekend during our costly defeat to Crystal Palace, many Liverpool fans reacted negatively to the news. You can read the worst of it, here.
We hope Jurgen Klopp doesn’t see the reaction, as it would infuriate him. The manager rates Lovren (hence the extension…) and waxed lyrical about the centre-back today.
“Dejan is a big presence for us on the pitch and in the dressing room – this is wonderful news that he has committed to LFC for such a long time,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It is our intention to build this squad around the great talent we already have. We want to keep our core together. I am really pleased Dejan has become the latest to recognise that Liverpool is a place where players can achieve their dreams and goals.

LFC fans react to Lovren’s bumper extension: ‘Unf*ckingbelievable’
“He is an outstanding defender and someone who, I believe, still has his best times to come as a player. He has all the assets a top centre-half needs in the modern game.
“He has already enjoyed some great moments at this club, but he, like all of us, is hungry to win trophies for LFC. I love this hunger and desire and look forward to seeing it translate to great performances for the team in the coming years.”
Even though Klopp likes Lovren, he still wants a top new defender in the summer, thank goodness. Virgil van Dijk is the primary target, but that’s up to whether we can cash in on Mamadou Sakho this summer.
