According to reliable Twitter account Scouts in Attendance, Liverpool sent somebody to watch Austria v Uruguay last night.
They also reckon that the most likely candidate as to the purpose of the trip was Atletico Madrid’s centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez, who starts alongside Diego Godin for Uruguay.
If #lfc scout at Austria v Uruguay was looking at defenders, worth noting that 22yo #atleti CB Jose Maria Gimenez is out of contract in the summer

The Echo have also picked up on it, and having checked out who was on the field during Austria’s 2-1 win, we can’t see there being anyone else we’re keeping an eye on.
Gimenez is 22-years-old and out of contract in the summer – so is available for a Bosman in roughly six weeks’ time.
He’s very talented, but also strong and feisty in equal measure. Gimenez isn’t the finished article yet, but for around £70m less than Virgil van Dijk would cost – it’s certainly worth considering.
Ideally, we could do with both.
