Klopp opens up on Coutinho exit, important message for LFC fans

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sounded as dejected as most of us are feeling as he discussed the exit of Philippe Coutinho after he secured a move to Barcelona.

Given the influence that the Brazilian magician continued to have for the Reds, it’s disappointing to see him leave and particularly the timing of his exit given we’re making real progress and there’s such an important part of the season ahead.

Klopp has shared his thoughts on the transfer and has insisted that the club tried everything to convince Coutinho to stay at Anfield, but ultimately his heart was set on a move to Spain.

“Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen,” he told liverpoolfc.com.

“I can tell the Liverpool supporters that we, as a club, have done everything within our means to convince Philippe that remaining part of LFC was as attractive as moving to Spain, but he is 100 per cent certain his future – and that of his family – belongs at Barcelona.”

Importantly though, Klopp went on to reassure us and remind us that ultimately no player is bigger than the club, and he’s confident that we can deal with the loss and move forward, as we have done on various occasions in the past.

“I have been here long enough now to know in the history of Liverpool, key players have left before – but the club always goes on. I have so much belief in the talent we have here already and even more faith, together with our owners, that we will make continued investment into the playing squad.”

Much will depend on how we potentially spend that money brought in as we’ve lost one of our best players and need to replace him, but there’s still plenty to be positive about with the likes of Mo Salah, Mane and Firmino driving us forward.

It was key to also hear Klopp suggest that continued investment is on the way, but time will tell whether we’ll see any new faces this month as he’ll undoubtedly want to bring in the right players to take us forward.

Nevertheless, while it’s still a huge blow to lose Coutinho, arguably on the other hand, we can solely focus on us and who’s coming in to strengthen the squad now that the transfer saga is over.
