Liverpool are closing in on Xherdan Shaqiri, who will become the third first-team signing of the summer following deals for Fabinho and Naby Keita.

Respected journalist James Pearce confirmed the news this morning after John Percy of the Telegraph made the initial claim last night.

Shaqiri has a £13m release-clause due to Stoke being relegated from the Premier League.

He’s still only 26-years-old, so it’s a bargain price in today’s market for a skilful attacker with experience of playing in the Champions League, England, Italy and Germany.

We don’t imagine he’ll be anything other than an impact substitute, or a rotation option for lesser competitions, but we’ve no problem with this.

Towards the end of last season our bench was very lightweight and at times featured players from the Academy.

Versatile, explosive attackers like Shaqiri could make a big difference.
