It’s easy to forget that before this season started, Joe Gomez wasn’t even supposed to be in our first-choice starting XI.
The spot alongside Virgil van Dijk was meant to be Dejan Lovren’s, but with the Croat returning from the World Cup injured, Jurgen Klopp fielded the Englishman in the middle due to Joel Matip also not being ready mid-August.
And we’re sure he’s mighty glad he did, too!
As these highlights will show, Gomez has everything you’d hope from a top centre-back: pace, strength, composure, tenacity and superb forward passing.
In our latest fixture, against Manchester City, Gomez actually played at right-back, but still did superbly.
Van Dijk gets most of the plaudits, and perhaps rightly so, as he’s completely transformed our backline since arriving in January, but Gomez complements him terrifically.
The fact we’re joint-top of the Premier League table, despite the front players not yet finding their feet, is testament to the performances of Gomez and his team-mates at the back.
