Determined Joe Gomez outlines the plan for next season

Joe Gomez missed out on playing in the Champions League final last season when he lost his place to Joel Matip having picked up a lower leg fracture against Burnley back in December.

That, though, has only increased his desire to win more trophies with Liverpool.

Gomez has revealed that as much as the whole squad were delighted to win the Champions League, the Premier League is the next aim, having come so close last season to ending the long wait for a league title last season.

Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, he explained: “We can be happy and proud of the achievement but we’ve got so much more work to do.

“The Premier League was so close. That’s all the motivation we need – we were so close but so far at the same time in the fact that we didn’t get it.

“It’s something we want to get this year – we can’t get complacent or dwell on what happened last season. We have to hit the ground running again.”

Gomez will need to impress in pre-season if he is to start the campaign alongside Virgil van Dijk. Matip and Dejan Lovren will also be looking to impress – as it stands, Gomez is probably third choice, behind the former and ahead of the latter.

The England international will hope to play a significant chunk of the first pre-season fixture against Tranmere Rovers on Thursday night, where he will probably start alongside one of his centre-back rivals.
