Not only does Andy Robertson think his partner in crime Trent Alexander-Arnold was the best right-back on the planet at the end of last season – but has claimed the Scouser was potentially Liverpool’s most important player – too.
Trent’s form as we closed on Champions League glory, while winning all our Premier League matches, was incredible.
He registered six assists in our final six domestic fixtures, while his assists for Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi against Barcelona are Anfield are already the stuff of legend.
“What was it [last season]? Mid to high-20s contributing goals? It is going to be hard to replicate it, but if we get close it helps the team,” he told the Telegraph.
“Trent was outstanding all last season but he took it to another level at the end of it and became the best right-back in the world. He almost became our main man in the last 10 games of the season.
“But the clean sheets were as important for us. As a pair, I felt our Champions League final performance was as mature a performance as we put in. Once we had the lead we were thinking, ‘clean sheet and we win the game’, and we did that.
“Near the back end of the season we noticed the emphasis on trying to stop me and Trent doing what we try to do. It is up to us to adapt to that, but if someone is dedicating time to try and stop me and Trent, that is going to create a lot of space for other players.
“The quality we have got shows it is very difficult for anyone to focus on just one or two players. Someone else will pop up.”
Robbo enjoyed a jaw-dropping campaign of his own, of course. The Scot assisted 11 goals in the top flight and a few more in Europe, establishing a reputation as the the best left-back on the planet.
In fact, we’d argue that Liverpool maybe have four players along the backline and between our sticks who are in the argument for ‘best on the planet’ in their positions.
Alisson won the Golden Glove in three competitions in 2018/19; Virgil van Dijk is the favourite for the Ballon d’Or and nobody played as well as Trent or Robbo at right or left-back!
