Reds ‘target’ Timo Werner signs new RB Leipzig deal – but his release clause is very low

Timo Werner has been linked with a move to Anfield for a long time, but this week signed a new deal with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

Not all is lost, though. Werner would have been able to leave for free at the end of the season had he not agreed new terms, and that was looking likely to be the case.

However, according to Kicker, his new contract includes a release clause of just €30 million, which probably explains his change of heart when it came to penning the new deal – any top club would be able to afford that.

Bayern Munich were thought to be the favourites to sign Werner on a free transfer, as they often snap up the best talent from the rest of the Bundesliga for little or no fee. That’s exactly what they did with LFC-linked Leon Goretzka a couple of years back when his contract with Schalke expired.

The new contract for the striker, however, could change the dynamic in the race for his signature. There is an argument that the Reds could be more likely to sign him now than before he signed with Leipzig, as Bayern might be put off by having to pay a transfer fee.

Even though Werner has signed a new contract with Leipzig, don’t expect the rumours of a move away to subside any time soon.
