Were Liverpool watching Timo Werner on Tuesday night?

It’s understood that Liverpool had scouts at Benfica’s Champions League game against Leipzig on Tuesday night. Might they have had their eye on Timo Werner?

Prolific forward Werner has been consistently linked with the Reds as a potential competitor for our usual front three.

Significantly, his new contract contains a release clause as low as €30million, according to German publication Kicker (via the Mirror).

And the Reds may be among the many clubs circling, with an image posted on Twitter by Lisbon journalist Marcus Alves seemingly indicating Anfield talent-spotters were in attendance at Estadio da Luz.

If indeed they were watching Werner, they would likely have been very impressed.

The German international’s second-half double earned the visitors three brilliant points.

The brace takes his tally for the campaign to seven goals in just six matches.

It is, of course, possible that we had our eyes on somebody else, with Leipzig (more so than their opponents) boasting plenty of exciting young players.

But of all the talent on show, it was only really Werner whose has name has repeatedly cropped up.
