Virgil van Dijk picked out Liverpool’s Irish keeper Caoimhín Kelleher as his star performer from last night’s crazy EFL Cup Last 16 win over Arsenal.
The Reds, jam-packed full of kids, drew 5-5 after normal time and then won the shootout after scoring all five.
That’s the second penalty shootout we’ve won this season after Chelsea in the Super Cup.
Our Dutch defender was given the night off, as were the rest of the usual first-team, but made sure to congratulate the boys following confirmation of our passage to the next round.
Van Dijk posted a picture of Kelleher and the caption, ‘Man Like’ – celebrating the keeper’s save from Dani Ceballos that eventually won us the game.
In fairness, Kelleher didn’t have a great night – especially in comparison with other youngsters like Neco Williams, Curtis Jones or Harvey Elliott – but fair play to VVD for filling the youngster with confidence.
We imagine Kelleher will get another run out against Aston Villa in the next round – although we’re not yet sure when that’ll be played!
