Worry as Klopp explains Joel Matip’s ‘not too cool’ injury

We can’t imagine we’ll be seeing Joel Matip in action until the New Year.

According to Jurgen Klopp, it’ll be another fortnight before Liverpool even asses the Cameroonian – and then he’ll need to get himself back into peak physical condition – which will surely take another few weeks in itself.

His last game was the 1-1 draw with Manchester United in October – but following the only match in the Premier League we haven’t won this season, Matip complained of a knee problem and it’s turned out to be more serious than originally thought.

“Everything in our life is all under pressure. All the little things have to heal as quickly as possible, but here it is taking the normal amount of time,” Klopp told the club’s website.

“It was not like after four weeks or so that it was already as we wished, so we have to wait another two weeks I would think and then we will see.

“But then he will have been out for six weeks or so, if it is perfect, fine, but he might need to rebuild his physical things as well, which is not too cool, but it is nothing serious.”

Dejan Lovren has done well in Matip’s absence, but with the Croat subbed off early v Bournemouth, it might now be Joe Gomez’s chance to cement the spot alongside Virgil van Dijk as his own for a bit.

All three have been chopped and changed by Klopp over the past two years as the Dutchman’s primary partner, mainly due to injuries, so Matip is unlikely to be automatically reinstated to our best starting XI when he returns anyway.
