With a loss against United pushing us further back in the race for 4th position, these remaining games, both in the Premiership, and the Europa League promise to be a damage limitation exercise through which we can see where we end up.
This is how the table currently looks like :-
So we just might be an effective 8 points behind city, 7 points Behind spurs and also 5 points behind Villa. Of course, their fixture lists can prove to be a hindrance for them, but at the lowly position we right now are in, we can’t take anything for granted, because their prospective losses to United or Chelsea could be negated if we slip up again in the remaining 7 games. We effectively HAVE to win the remaining 21 points taking our tally to 72, and hope that spurs don’t win more than 16 from their 8, city don’t win 15 from their 9, and villa manage not more than 22 from their 9. Ominous reading for us Liverpool fans and after analyzing the numbers, we might be staring at any league position now. just shows how far we have regressed in this one year..
Of course our only saving grace is the fact that we have drawn relatively tough teams for the quarters and semis, so if we DO manage to go all the way, then it would hold some solace to us that we did so by beating our main competitors instead of tackling the minnows. (Well Benfica and Valencia/atleti are no Barca and Bayern, but they are just what we deserve right now).
Anyway, I just can’t wait to see this season finish, for there are things to look forward to as well. In the off season, our ownership issues might be resolved to an extent and with the slate wiped clean, we can hope for radical changes (yes radical) in our team, staff and tactics. And with definitely lesser weight of expectations in 2010-11, the team might actually give us something to cheer about, after all Liverpool tend to do better when the limelight is elsewhere. :)
