We won, we won, won!

Liverpool 2 Blackburn Rovers 1 Sunday 24th October

I have just finished listening to this game on radio 5 live and I have to say that it is nice to actually report that we have actually won a game in the league for the first time in what seems like an age (well since the West Brom game anyway).

It did sound like rather a scrappy game for the most part, but it was one where we played much better than we have for quite a while and actually had some good passages of play and created chances and, best of all, scored two goals one from Krygiakos and one from Torres.

This was the story of the second half however as the first half wasn’t really much to write home about. We did outplay Blackburn for large portions of the first period and should really have scored but by the end of the match it wasn’t looking great for us, as even though we were playing much better and, more importantly, playing better as a team in general that we hadn’t capitalised on our play and took the lead in the match, which would have made us feel a lot better going into the second half.

It would have been very easy for Blackburn to have nicked a goal and totally changed the perspective of the entire half, and quite possibly the end result, but they just didn’t capitalise on their chances either.

In the second half we came out and totally bossed the game and it wasn’t long before we took the lead with a goal from Krygiakos who probably could have scored twice in the game. Then it all went tits up as Blackburn went ahead and promptly equalised with a really bad goal from our point of view as it was an own goal of Jamie Carragher’s chest after Martin Skrtel had kicked the ball of the goal line and hit him. There was no way he could have stopped it from going in and it was worse that it was totally against the run of play where we were totally bossing the game and looking like the clear victors. Then some mistakes were made and we found ourselves back on level terms again which was completely typical of our season so far to be frank.

We soon took the lead again with a goal from Fernando Torres, which will hopefully kick start his very stop-start season into action. It was a great goal, very typical of Torres at his best, which we certainly have not seen so far this season.

Once we had taken the lead again we started to drop off a bit and not be quite as proactive as we had been, which was a bit of a shame, as I was then hoping that we would go forward and kill off the game once and for all with at least one more goal, but that sadly never happened.

The last ten minutes saw Blackburn almost get back into the game and they could very easily have got a point from this right near the end of the match when Martin Skrtel for some reason smashed the ball back to Pepe Reina and if it wasn’t for Reina controlling it with his chest would have ended up lodged in the back of the net and lost us two precious points. Luckily for us that we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world, as most would have struggled with this. Quite what Skrtel was thinking when he did this is unknown, but he would have had egg on his face if Reina hadn’t been able to control it.

In the end we prevailed and got the full three points from the match, which was no less than we deserved after the way we played during the match. Hopefully this is the start of things to come. Hopefully anyway…

  1. still need kenny that left back paul crabchesky is dire need ashley young at 14m and that fernando loriente 24m sell babel 6m and maxi 2m+ thats 30m ,not chris brunt 9m ! woy should not be trusted with money to buy a mars bar

  2. Blackburn ironically setup to play like Roy Liverpool past game which made it very easy for us. Owen Bolton should be a better test in term of opposition has a go at Roy team. Anyway I still think Roy is not right for us and should be sacked. As his subsitutions and reverted to same old Roy tactic in the last 20 min rather than stretched the lead.

  3. We played excellent, bossed the game, dominated possession and it was only several great saves by Robinson (and some very close shaves) that denied us a lead at half time.

It was therefore no surprise that we scored early in the 2nd half. Their freaky equaliser was unlucky, and Carragher was certainly not to blame for the own goal resulting from Blackburn’s only shot on goal in the match up to that point. Torres finished neatly for the winner.

This was easily our best (and most attacking) performance so far.

Mustn’t have quite come across that way on the radio. Plenty of highlights to watch later mate!

  4. We need to buy players coz we lack depth .stop joking about who’s gonna go .players should be fighting to be in the 11,even seniors like carra, nando or steevie .then the team Will be chasing every one and winning everything

  5. He still needs to go. What are the new owners waiting for. Is it that big news that we beat blackburn. How low we have fallen under him, that when we beat blackburn is a big news.

  6. we won and we deserved it which makes sweeter. I thoought Midfield work hard, Lucas and Maxi had improved a lot and Poulson was not there to slwous down. I also thought Carragher in full back position was very good the greek and skertle were solid however Knoshesky was poor again.
it was not a great display from Torres however he scored and look a little bit more interseted. Cole was creative.
Blackburn were very lucky that they didnot conceded any first half as we had atleast 4 very good chances and their goalie made some good saves.
Gerrard was man of the match for me, he was outstanding.

  7. overall performence was very good but last 25-30min was very embarrsing.this is only single match…..In my view Liverpool is not READY.

  8. Firstly give credit where credits due, the players showed some fight today Torres was working hard, Kyrgiakos was winning every header in the oppositions box from set plays and should and could have scored a hattrick, Joe Cole, Gerrard and Meireles played well. Our defence still looked shaky even tho Dioufs shot was lucky to go in after Konchesky cleard off the line it rebounded off Carragher n back in the net. However i think it could have been alot harder had the 2 Rovers players not get injured and if Samba wasn’t suspended. We were by faar the best team but again made it diffucult for ourselves conceding a stupid goal and we kept giving the ball away, but that was also due to the managers tactics playing ‘hoof ball up the pitch’. 1 step in the right direction and we could have had alot more goals had it not been for Paul Robinsons sublime saves. I still wont be persuaded that Roy should be given time because i think hes the wrong man for the job and hes way out of his depth. Going away to Bolton will be difficult i don’t expect a win really with our performances of late and even more eyes and pressure will be on the manager with the game being shown LIVE ON SKY SPORTS 1 4PM if hes still there next Sunday……YNWA

WIN LOSE OR DRAW, SHOW ROY THE DOOR

  9. ncie to win but still can’t see Roy turning it around at this point .. if he can do this against Chelsea, i may start to re-consider (if only briefly..) ..

  10. What an uninformed, biased load of rubbish.
I am no great fan of Roy, but before making comments like these at least do us the privilege of going to see the Reds.
The performance was infinitely better than you suggest. At last there is some basis for hope.

That’s where I stopped reading this shite. I don’t recall us playing this well under Rafa for the whole of last season. But hey, what do I know, I watched the game?

    Tool

  12. @Martinmarx,

Did things get this bad under Rafa? where we ever in the relegation zone? Did Rafa complain with what Houllier left him with? ANSWER NOPE

You can say Houllier left him with a similar situation, players like Traore, Biscan, Cisse, Pongolle, Mellor, Smicer, Kewell La’Tellac didnt set the Prem on fire in a Liverpool shirt, Rafa came in and changed their mentality and focus and got us the Champions League, the main factor he changed things good or bad, he had the bottle to do things his way formation and style of football we played.

Whats Roy done, i expected a change for the difference under him nothing changed major Lucas still plays the formation is the same the only difference i can see is that we no longer mark players zonally and we now play alot of long balls and the defenders prefer to just hoof the ball more then being calm and bringing it out……YNWA

  13. Adam,
I have read quite a few of your articles and match reports now and I must say, well done mate. You write well and are usually spot on.

  14. @LFCforum,

Ask yourself that question, Roy has done fcuk all, tell me what hes changed for the better? He needs to take responsibility for where the team languishes right now after all he did say judge me after the first 10 games we’ve played 9. I expected a change when he came in thats what we all thought, the only change i can see is where playing man for man at the back, and now playing alot of long balls, when we’ve been to playing the ball to feet for so many years under Rafa nowonder we can’t get in to half the games weve played. How many headers do you expect Torres to win on his own upfront when the balls lumped up to you consistantly against two central defenders.

Roys got a small club mentality and i don’t think anythings changed afer this win, the Bolton game will be a hard one and the Chelsea game will probably be ROys last……YNWA
