Diminutive Welsh midfielder Joe Allen is confident we will qualify from our Champions League group, despite falling to a third European defeat in as many matches.

The Reds put in an improved performance against tournament holders Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, but still fell to a 1-0 defeat, meaning we now lie three points behind FC Basel with two matches remaining.

“We are confident we can get six points from the remaining two games,” Allen told Liverpoolfc.com.

“We understand we have got a lot of work to do and it’s not going to be easy, but we’ve got the self-belief we can do that and get ourselves into the next round.”

If Liverpool collect six points from matches against Ludogorets and FC Basel, we’ll almost certainly guarantee qualification.

Beating the Bulgarian minnows away is not going to be easy, but it’s doable, especially as they’re forced to play their home games in Sofia, because their actual ground is too small.

If we can get through that one with the three points, the atmosphere on the final night of the group at Anfield versus Basel will be electric, and the Kop should be able to pull us through.

Let’s hope Allen’s right, anyway…
